Alaska’s Fort Greely plays important role in nation’s missile defense

Article has been reprinted from: Local News Anchorage

With the U.S. potentially facing an ongoing threat from nations like North Korea and Iran, military officials argue that the nation’s missile defense system, including missiles in Alaska’s Fort Greely are more important than ever.

The missile defense system has faced slashed budgets in past years and plenty of criticism, but Thursday Lt. Gen. Patrick O’Reilly said the U.S. faces a bigger threat from nations like North Korea and Iran and that means missile defense at Fort Greely near Delta Junction becomes more important with each passing day.

The secretary of defense announced Thursday that the nation’s missile defense system will not take a budget cut in fiscal year 2012 — in fact that budget has been increased because of the outside threats.

Critics of the program question the ability of the missiles at Fort Greely to actually function properly and eliminate enemy threats, pointing to test failures, but O’reilly says each missile test is designed to get more difficult and that the system is improving with each test.

“In the past we’ve seen the systems be overwhelmed by the number of objects at one time that it’s trying to track, and we’ve shown we’ve been able to overcome that and we now have quite a large capacity with capability,” said O’Reilly.

O’reilly also said it’s important to have the flexibility that Fort Greely offers, being able to increase the number of missiles at the site if threats from other countries get worse.
