Fairbanks Symphony Concert Schedule

FAIRBANKS – As summer is slowly slipping into autumn, it’s time to get ready for the 2011-12 Concert Season.

The season opens on Sunday October 2 with a 4:00 pm concert by the Arctic Chamber Orchestra, featuring the lovely Korean born pianist Klara Min. Maestro Zilberkant leads the Arctic Chamber Orchestra in a program of works by Gordon Jacob, Robert Schumann and Rodion Shchedrin. The Arctic Chamber Orchestra’s wind and brass section will perform Jacob’s setting of English Folk songs entitled Old Wine in New Bottles. Ms. Min will perform Schumann’s  Piano Concerto. After intermission, the concert concludes with a performance of Shchedrin’s thrilling 1967 arrangement of memorable tunes from Bizet’s opera Carmen for percussion and string orchestra.

The next performance occurs on Sunday, October 30 and features Dmitri Berlinsky performing the Jean Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Fairbanks Symphony. After intermission, the audience will be treated to a full performance of Anton Bruckner’s powerful Symphony No. 4. This piece has never been performed in its entirety in Fairbanks (and maybe in all of Alaska). Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of the great late-romantic era compositions.

A perennial favorite, the Design Alaska Holiday Concert happens on December 4 this year. As usual, the concert will feature the Choir of the North, the University Chorus, the Northland Children’s Choir and the FSO in music tailored to celebrate the glory of the Holiday Season. The Fairbanks Symphony will also host its annual Silent Auction on this date beginning at 2:00 pm, two hours prior to the start of the Holiday Concert.

The 21st annual Concerto Competition, sponsored by Great Northwest Inc. will be held on January 28-29, 2012 and the winners will be featured at our final concert of the season on April 29, 2012.

February offers two special performances featuring two dramatic guest soloists who have a special affinity with Fairbanks audiences. Violinist Paul Rosenthal and cellist Zuill Bailey will team up with Maestro Zilberkant in an intimate chamber music recital on Thursday, February 23, 2012. They will also be joined by violist Nina Missildine.
On Sunday,  February 26, 2012 Rosenthal, and Zilberkant will be featured soloists with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra. The concert includes Beethoven’s Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano and the Brahms Double Concerto for Violin and Cello.

On March 25, the young  Israeli harp virtuoso Sivan Magen, makes his Fairbanks debut as soloist in Alberto Ginastera’s Harp Concerto. Works by Mendelssohn and Poulenc are also included in the concert.

Our final concert of the 2011-12 season occurs on April 29 featuring the winners of the 21st  Concerto Competition. The soloists will be announced shortly after the competition in late January 2012. Maestro Zilberkant will fill out the concert with other works to be performed by the orchestra once the soloists have been selected.
