Spring Gala Was Presented May 5

GALA -  Webster tells us is a show or festivity

In the context of the ballet, GALA has come to be understood as a presentation of a series of dances, not necessarily related to each other or to a specific single ballet work, but instead is excerpts from several productions, or even new dances composed exclusively for the GALA.

The presentation showcases the dancers, demonstrating their grace, prowess, and artistic skills.

And such a GALA was presented to an appreciative audience in Delta on Saturday evening at the Community Center to a packed house, meeting both definitions, for it was indeed a festivity.

Mrs Mary Lou Longwell, AKA Miss Mary to others who are constantly amazed at her creativity, boundless patience and energy.  Others think of her as the indefatigable Miss Mary, proprietor, principal teacher, wardrobe mistress, choreographer set designer, and more of the En Croix Ballet School and Company.

The house (one-half of the community center) was humming with anticipation and expectation as the crowd awaited the opening curtain (uh, accordion doors).

And suddenly—the serial delights began, and continued for more than an hour–who knows, for who could take their eyes from the stage long enough to glance at a wristwatch!

We were treated to two scenes, featuring about twenty young dancers (hard to tell exactly, for some of the dancers appeared more than once in different elegant costumes), nine individual choreographed dances, and WOW–guest artists–three adult ethnic dancers in colorful national costumes from Mexico and Peru.

The young dancers of En Croix have been preparing assiduously all winter–and make no mistake, this is work, not play, although one is certain that there is fun and pride in accomplishment as well.  Ballet is a discipline, and requires commitment, learning, and effort from the participants.

The pride, the effort, and the enthusiasm all shone through, and made for us a delightful and enchanting evening at the EN CROIX SPRING GALA.

Delta is most fortunate to have Miss Mary living here, teaching, and creating with our young aspiring artists. She provides her students with a skillset and a legacy that will be of value to them for the remainder of their lives.

The Fred Eaglesmith Traveling Show with Gordie Tentrees Band

8pm, Thursday, May 3
Pioneer Park Theatre – Fairbanks

Tickets $35 at www.acousticadventures.com,
Grassroots Guitar or call 488-0556

Sponsored by Sophie Station Hotel and FNSB Parks and Recreation

Fred Eaglesmith & Gordie Tentrees Yukon-Alaska Tour Apr. 28-May 12. You can catch two of the hardest working roots acts as they tour the north country with dates in Atlin, Whitehorse, Dawson City, Haines Junction, Fairbanks, Anchorage and Talkeetna. Call it a gypsy caravan, road show, musical carnival–it’s all that and more.

Legendary songwriter Fred Eaglesmith has one of most fascinating careers in contemporary music. His songs have been covered by Alan Jackson, Cowboy Junkies, Mary Gauthier, Todd Snider, Dar Williams, and many others. Eaglesmith transcends and blends such genres and categories as rock’n’roll, country, folk, singer-songwriter, Americana, blues and bluegrass to fashion his own distinctive brand of literate, melodic and rhythmic rocking elecro-acoustic North American music. He’s won a Juno Award for Best Roots & Traditional Album, appeared on Letterman, had his music used in films and as curriculum in colleges and just released his 19th album.

“In between singing songs about farming, ranching, trucks, trains, guns, drinking, loving, losing and life in the sticks, Eaglesmith adds a dry-witted commentary on life around him.” ~Arizona Daily Star

“His voice is road weathered and whiskey soaked and mournful.” ~ LA Beat

Human Trafficking in Alaska

Delta Junction Aglow Presents this important information.

Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons (TIP), is a modern-day form of slavery. It is a crime under federal and international law, and is also a crime in Alaska. It includes forced or coerced labor or sexual trafficking. Human trafficking victims can be male or female, citizens or immigrants, any age, any socio-economic status, any race. This informative presentation will include information about the effect and prevalence of human trafficking, and its presence in Alaska.

Our speaker, Dolly Caswell is a passionate advocate and educator about  Human  Trafficking.  An  Alaskan,  Dolly  became  involved  with human trafficking issues after hearing a lecture several years ago about the number of Alaskans who fall prey. Since then, her efforts, education and  research has been to find out more about this horrendous crime, how  it  is affecting the  people  of Alaska, specifically children,  and traveling the world to spread awareness.

The Arctic Man is a unique event that has grown to be one of the major winter events held within the state of Alaska wilderness. The 2012 Arctic Man is the 27th anniversary, that’s twenty seven years of adrenaline rush and speed.

The main event is scheduled for Friday, April 13, again we are hoping for good weather. We will use April 14 & 15 as back up dates. The race this year will START at 11 am and should be done by 12:30pm. The ARCTIC MAN SNO-GO CHALLENGE is right after the race which should START about 1:30 and should be done about 3PM.   About the Race: The Arctic Man is a race for teams of two skilled competitors that tests the strength of an athlete and the horsepower of a snowmobile. Courage and training are essential elements of this team of snowmobile and skier. The Arctic Man is one of the World’s Toughest Downhill Ski races, and an exciting snowmobile race, all in one. The skier begins at a summit elevation of 5,800 feet and drops 1700 feet in less than two mile to the bottom of a narrow canyon where he meets up with his snowmobiling partner.

The snowmobiler meets the skier, on the go, with a tow rope and pulls the skier 2 1/4 miles uphill at top speeds of up to 86 mph. The skier and the snowmobile then separate and the skier goes over the side of the second mountain and drops another 1200 feet to the finish line.

At the Arctic Man you ” GO FAST or GO HOME.”

Truly the Ultimate Adrenaline Rush for spectators and competitors alike. Last year approximately 13,000 spectators came from around the nation as well as different countries around the world to enjoy this spectacular Alaskan event. The area the race is held is some of the best snowmachine riding country in the world. The snowcapped peaks and beauty make this spring event one that you will treasure for a lifetime.

Black Veterans Memorial Bridge Historic Event

Driving to Delta Junction on the 28th was a very memorable moment; going to lay the wreath outside of Delta Junction at the Black Veterans Memorial Bridge was a historic event.  This is the 3rd annual year for the Juneteenth Alaskan Alcan Highway to celebrate the accomplishments of the African-American engineer soldiers.

We had a ceremony at the Delta Junction visitor center and a ceremony at the library with some of the fort Greely command. Dr. Meyers played “Alcan” on his horn, a song that God gave him for the African-American soldiers.  The roads were very icy and the wind was very heavy. Travel time was slow at best. When we laid the wreath at the black soldiers veteran bridge, we all felt the souls of the soldiers and we are working to make it bigger and better next year.

Alaska Snow Safety Conference ~ Nov 4

You’re invited to attend the first Alaska Statewide Snow Safety Conference, Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday Nov. 5 at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage.

In a state covered by snow more than half of each year, and where more people are injured and die in avalanches and snowmachine accidents than any other state, it’s about time.

The North America Outdoor Institute is proud to help coordinate and launch this statewide conference with support from APU and the Alaska Avalanche Information Center as well as dozens of volunteers, sponsors and other partners.

More than fifty snow safety professionals from all around Alaska will be gathering to talk snow;  How to forecast it, understand it and recreate in it safely will be the primary focus. An added bonus, the ISSW (International Snow Science Workshop, known as the Olympics of snow forecasting and education) will be coming to Anchorage for the first time in 2012. This ASSC will help to set the stage for the larger International effort next year.

This year’s conference will bring together Alaska’s elite snow safety professionals to help advance the efforts of forecasting and educating others about the potential dangers.

If you drive to Seward, Valdez or Fairbanks, you will pass through avalanche zones. If you recreate in Mountain Passes like Turnagain, Johnson, Hatchers, Thompson… you are playing with the lions of avalanches.

Understanding how to recognize danger signs, safe zones and rescue techniques can make the difference between an incredible backcountry adventure and the ultimate tragedy.

We have requested the honor of the Governor’s attendance on Friday morning at 9am to kick off the conference and present his proclamation for Avalanche Awareness Education Month, as well as Saturday from 1-6p.

We hope you will join us for the kick-off of the conference Friday morning at 9am or the kick-off of the public training session beginning at 1pm on Saturday.

Please contact Debra McGhan at 907-376-2898 to learn more. You can find more information about the conference at: alaskasnowsafetyconference.webs.com

The Fairbanks Winter Expo is a prime marketing opportunity for your business to take advantage of winter. An annual consumer trade show full of businesses and agencies that have products and services to help Fairbanks not only make it through the long hard months of winter but have a good time in the process.

This will be the 15th year of the Expo and it has become a well established community event. Outside activities…snow machines to skijoring, inside activities…how to be a big brother to photo album art, car care…snow plows to winterization, home care…boiler tune up to heating fuel, travel ideas…a Valdez ski trip to a weekend at the local hot springs…it’ll all be there in one location, on one floor, with lots of free parking.

Why settle for great when we can make it even better!!!

The Energy & Retrofitting Marketplace

Energy costs are on everyone’s mind and we have dedicated a portion of the Winter Expo to energy related vendors and housing specialists. The Energy & Retrofitting Marketplace sponsored by the IABA will give the public an opportunity to find out what energy saving products are available in the community, discuss retrofitting remodelling options, and schedule construction projects for early spring.

The Fairbanks Winter Expo represents many local and state-wide businesses, has become an unofficial kick off to winter and now offers an array of important and educational information on energy savings. If you have a product or service that can help people save money the Winter Expo is designed to help you get the word out!

Additionally, these MVPA members will honor our Veterans and all members of our Armed Forces with this convoy.

In support of the organization’s mission “History in Motion™,” the MVPA 2012 Alaska Highway Convoy will launch from Dawson Creek, British Columbia on August 4, 2012.  The convoy will travel 4,100 miles in 27 days.

While many groups travel the Alaska Highway, the MVPA’s convoy to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the building of the Alaska Highway is especially significant, according to Stan Cohen, author of the book “The Trail of ’42 – A Pictorial History of the Alaska Highway.”

“Military vehicles were the backbone of the Alaska Highway construction project,” said Cohen. “Building the road would not have been possible without more than 7,000 pieces of military equipment.”

According to MVPA Convoy Projects Leader and Convoy Commander Terry Shelswell, 97 historic military vehicles are expected to travel the entire 4,100 mile route, with more vehicles joining in to drive a portion of the trip.

“This will be a convoy of historic military vehicles of all eras, from WWI through current-issue,” said Convoy Commander Shelswell. “The military vehicles are privately-owned and restored by individuals who have an interest in preserving these vehicles and the important roles they played throughout our military history.”

In 2009 the MVPA retraced the Army’s 1919 Transcontinental Motor Convoy along the famed Lincoln Highway from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco.  Over 100 military vehicles participated in that historic 30-day convoy.

As the convoy passes through cities and towns along the Alaska Highway, MVPA members will draw attention to the 70th anniversary of this great engineering feat and the U.S. Army troops who made it happen.  MVPA members will also take every opportunity to thank our veterans, past and present.

Sustainable Livestock Production in Alaska

October 13 & 14, 2011
Sheraton Anchorage Hotel

The words ‘food sustainability and food security’ seem to crop up everywhere today and are particularly relevant in a state like Alaska where approximately 85 percent of everything we eat is imported.

Today, agricultural production is possible, productive, and active in many parts of the state, especially with respect to smaller-scale production in the Interior, the Matanuska Susitna Valleys, and in Southeast Alaska.

This workshop provides a venue for bringing together Alaska professionals in livestock production, marketing and policy to:

Identify best practices that work – from the production of healthy meat to the health of the ecosystem.

Identify barriers to sustainable red meat production – from farm to market issues and consumer attitudes, preference and choice. Identify how the university can work in
collaborative ways to support the development of sustainable agriculture through research, education and extension.

Alaska is uniquely positioned to design and develop an agricultural and food production system that is unencumbered by outdated practices and old attitudes. Developing sustainable food systems is the first step toward food security, and demonstrates our strong commitment to sustainable food systems for all Alaskans.

Garrison Public Affairs Office
Fort Wainwright, Alaska

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – A three-day Oktoberfest featuring a Volksmarch, traditional German and contemporary music, food, beer, and games for children and adults takes place here at Nugget Lanes Bowling Center.

Oktoberfest takes place from Friday through Sunday: Aug. 26 from 4-10 p.m.; Aug. 27 from noon-10 p.m. and Aug. 28 from noon-5 p.m.

Admission is free and community members from surrounding areas are welcome to attend.

All activities take place in the tent or on the green beside the bowling center at 3702 Santiago Avenue.

A kick-off event with a Bavarian-inspired, ceremonial tapping of the keg takes place at 4 p.m. Aug. 26.

Fort Wainwright’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation special events coordinator lined up bands for all three days starting with the 9th Army Band 4-6 p.m. and followed by Ken Peltier’s country band 8-10 p.m. Aug. 26.

A Volksmarch at noon marks the beginning of Day 2 of Oktoberfest, Aug. 27. There is no advance registration and participants can choose the 3.5 or 5.5 mile route, both beginning and ending at the bowling center. The Volksmarch is traditionally a social event; walking is common, but runners are welcome to participate.

Back at the bowling center green, Oktoberfest activities and the musical variety continues with four bands performing Aug. 27.

The 9th Army band will start things off at 1 p.m.

The Avery Wolves take the stage at 3 p.m. and Eating for Two follows, pumping out ska jams at 5 p.m. The bands took first and second place respectively during the Battle of the Bands this summer at the Birch Hill ski hill. Eating for Two snagged the People’s Choice award.

Static Cycle, the band that opened for Drowning Pool here, provide the closing show, Aug. 27 starting at 8 p.m.

Day 3 of Oktoberfest hometown band, Sweating Honey entertains crowds Aug. 28 from 3:30-5 p.m. Singles, duos and families of all ages are welcome to attend all three days but event organizers are focusing on families for the Day 3 festivities noon-5 p.m.

German food like bratwurst and schnitzel draws crowds during Oktoberfest. Fairbanks restaurateurs will be on post for Oktoberfest all three days. Local businesses also provided sponsorship support, helping make the event possible.

Concert-goers do not need to stop at the visitors’ center for a pass. Drivers and adult passengers should be prepared to show identification on request.

3,000 Mile “Greater than Graves” Bike Trek to Stop in Delta

Contact:  Michaela Cui (603)978-4282
Kimberly Dorris (877)643-3123, ext 101 or kimberly@ngdf.org

Most new college graduates look forward to trading final exams and term papers for some well-earned leisure time.  But Michaela Cui, who graduated in May from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in aerospace engineering, will instead be tackling an even bigger challenge:  a 45-day, 3000-mile bicycle trip.

Cui, along with fellow graduates Ben Weerts and Chris Doudna, will kick off this unique journey in Anchorage on June 1st and will conclude 45 days later in San Francisco, CA.  The group expects to arrive in Delta Junction on Wednesday, June 8th.  The ride will serve to raise funds and awareness for the Graves’ Disease & Thyroid Foundation.

In 2010, Cui was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease, an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland to make too much thyroid hormone, causing hyperthyroidism.  Additional immune targets may include the connective tissue cells surrounding the eyes and the skin located on the front of the shin.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism can include rapid heartbeat, heart palpitations, unexplained weight loss, increased appetite, restlessness, decreased attention span, shortness of breath, fatigue, insomnia, heat intolerance, increased perspiration, frequent bowel movements, and lighter menstrual periods.  Signs of eye involvement can include dry eyes, swelling, redness, eyelid retraction, a “gritty” sensation, bulging (proptosis), and double vision.

Because the symptoms of Graves’ Disease can mimic other health conditions, patients may have a difficult time receiving a proper diagnosis and timely treatment.  In Cui’s case, rapid weight loss initially led her doctors to believe she was suffering from anorexia.  Complications of improperly treated Graves’ disease include heart failure, osteoporosis, severe emotional disorders, and thyroid storm, which can be fatal.

The initial spark for the “Greater Than Graves’” ride began when Cui was in the early stages of treatment.  “I began to feel alone and uncertain of my future,” Cui recalls.  “So I decided to do something about it and focus my energies on building awareness and understanding of this disease that affects so many people.”  Cui says that doctors have given her the final go-ahead to participate, “provided that I wear goofy goggles or big sunglasses to protect my eyes!”

To read Cui’s blog, follow her progress in real time, or make a contribution, please visit the Greater Than Graves’ web site at www.greaterthangraves.com

Events That Took Place in our Community

Delta Junction was a very busy place last Saturday, May 21. It was a warm/sunny day and  many people supported both events that took place.

Community members and different organizations met at the Visitor’s Center at 8:30am and cleaned up the garbage that accumulated over the long winter months.  Thank you to each one that showed up to help make our town beautiful. A BBQ was served for those who participated in clean up.

The Alaska Law Enforcement Torch Run and Pledge Drive helped benefit Special Olympics.

The 5K run started at the Delta Junction Visitors Center and continued east on the Alaska Highway to Emmaus Road and back to the Visitors Center.
