High production values make “Blessings in Disguise” a treat

DELTA JUNCTION – Delta Junction might not look like a place one would find a  professional theater production — just call it one of the town’s “Blessings in  Disguise.”

That’s the title of George Hosier’s latest Christmas season  drama, which is playing for a second weekend at the Living Waters Assembly of  God in downtown Delta. The free shows open at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and  Sunday.

“It’s like a comical-fantasy look at the nativity,” Hosier said  of his latest work. The play is set at the time of Christ’s birth, but with  modern props such as telephones and computers.

In one scene, an irate  chef challenges a tax man with a cleaver, only to be met with a 9 mm pistol,  Hosier said.

Despite the humor and juxtaposition of props from  far-distant centuries, “the theme deals with fairly serious issues,” Hosier  said, including “how blessing can be derived from unexpected sources, such as  pain and suffering.”

Ken Farrow, a fan in Delta Junction, said the  productions are top quality and pack the house.

He described Hosier as an “accomplished playwright.”

Hosier, who works at the Family Medical Center  in Delta, said he previously acted professionally with Sight & Sound  Entertainment, a Christian stage production company based in Strasburg, Pa., and  has “always dabbled around” in theater work.

Hosier has written and  helped produce up to two seasonal plays in Delta each year since 2005, one at  Christmas and another at Easter. His wife, Gaylene, works on the sets and  costumes.

“The last two years, we had an entire western town on stage at  the church.

People really loved that set; it was pretty elaborate,” Hosier said.

Rehearsals begin three months in advance and often are held  twice per week. Hosier has acted in previous plays because of a shortage of  adult males interested in taking on the parts. “This year, I was able to sit out  and just direct,” he said.

In past years,

some plays Manager of  Bethlehem Inn, Luxury Suites, Bistro and Spa, (Martin Hosier) ponders why his  staff doesn’t seem to properly appreciate him in “Blessings in  Disguise.”

have gone “on the road” to North Pole and Fort Greely. The  plays are staged under the auspices of the Delta Christian Drama Association, a  nonprofit unaffiliated with any church or denomination, Hosier said. The  association takes donations, sells DVDs of its productions and holds a silent  auction and some bake sales to offset costs.

DCDA Presents Blessings in Disguise

Greetings, friends of Delta Christian Drama Association:

Bethlehem Inn, Luxury Suites and Spa was facing a business crisis. The manager was at wit’s end. The tax collector was hounding him. The ox-cart shuttle was on the blink. His camel parking valet and bistro waitress had quit, and all the desk clerk wanted to do was to prop his feet up on the reservation desk and watch the gladiatorial games on the idiot box.

The manager wracked his brain trying to figure out what he had done wrong. What more could a good Pharisee possibly do to earn God’s blessing? Didn’t he always eat Kosher? Hadn’t he even earned the Golden Phylactery Prize for legalism above and beyond the call of duty? Wasn’t God supposed to bless his children, instead of ignoring them?

Now, a couple of senile old guests named Anna and Simeon kept blabbering on about Messiah’s imminent arrival. Well, it was a good pipe dream, but a pragmatic businessman like the manager didn’t see it happening any time soon. In fact, life just kept getting weirder. A noisy little drummer boy had started hanging out in his lobby, disturbing the guests. Some girl in a shiny white dress named Gabriella insisted that a certain Mr. Immanuel King had booked a non-existent reservation. Then, to top it off, during the peak of busy season, a penniless contractor and his pregnant fiance had showed up looking for a handout. Almost made a guy wonder if God had completely forgotten his children…

Everybody is invited to watch this plot unfold on stage by attending Delta Christian Drama Association’s 2011 Christmas show. Entitled “Blessings in Disguise”, this original stage play may be seen on December 10, 11, 17 and 18 at Living Waters Assembly of God across from IGA and beside Interior Building Supply in downtown Delta Junction. Admission is free. Performances start at 6:30.

Since 2005, DCDA, a non-denominational volunteer community arts organization has been producing high-quality theater for the Delta/Greely community. “Blessings in Disguise” will debut some amazing new talent. You will laugh and cry. Guaranteed. This is one show you won’t want to miss. For further information call 907-895-5289 or visit www.dcda.info.

God Bless you for your ongoing support of this ministry.

Popular Old West Theme Returns to Local Stage

This Christmas season, don’t miss a Delta Junction tradition performed by local Delta Junction talent.  The “Carpenter’s Return”, a two and a half hour stage play will be presented by Delta Christian Drama Association at Living Waters Assembly of God on December 4, 5, 11, and 12 at 6:00pm each night.  “The Carpenter’s Return” will be DCDA’s funniest show to date, incorporating comedy that ranges from witty repartee to outrageous physical slapstick.

Fans from Tok to Fairbanks who attended Delta Christian Drama Association’s 2010’s spring production of “The Carpenter’s Touch” proclaimed that show to be an all-time favorite.  The elaborate set of fictitious Jericho, Nevada drew the audience back to the year 1876.  As the lights came up, memorable characters came to life in the dusty street between the livery, saloon, mercantile and schoolhouse.  There was suave Seamus Kelly, the corrupt Irish mayor and his strutting little gunslinging sheriff, Zachaeus Shaw.  In cahoots with the two of them schemed the Parson’s widder, Leanna Medlock.  Then there were the decent folks:  Eleanor Pruitt, the honest blacksmith who wouldn’t tolerate no guff; Catherine Fossett, the prim, spinster schoolmarm; Gus Atkins, the gambler with a weakness for the bottle.  There was dirt-poor Amos and Martha Wagner, who were struggling to grow enough corn to keep from being evicted from their little farm.  Then there was Blind Bart, the street beggar who nobody noticed.  Nobody, that is, until a stranger drifted through town—a handyman named Kirk de Cruz who carried a carpenter’s tool bag and a well-worn Bible.  Everyone who came under the influence of Kirk’s gentle smile and quiet faith found their lives changed forever.  By the time Kirk had passed on to other parts, Blind Bart was no longer blind, Seamus and Zach had been brought to justice and all of Jericho had been reborn.

But Jericho still has some lessons to learn.  In this upcoming sequel, the town is ecstatic to receive a post card from Kirk de Cruz, announcing that he will be dropping in for a visit around Christmas time.  As they begin excited preparations for the occasion, little do they realize that none of them are as safe nor as righteous as they had imagined.  As unexpected events unfold, their comfortable lifestyle is about to become jeopardized in ways they had not imagined possible.  In addition, Jericho will be faced with its own racial and cultural prejudices when an immigrant family fleeing the turmoil in Tsarist Russia seek refuge in Jericho.

Although “The Carpenter’s Return” is a sequel, it will not be necessary to have attended “The Carpenter’s Touch” in order to enjoy this production thoroughly.  The plot and characterizations stand on their own merit, yet provide enough information for returning audience members to appreciate the historical context of the previous show.  A surprise plot twist at the end will be well worth waiting for.

Additional features will include live local music, a silent auction, door prizes, and for Delta Junction’s Slavic community, a DCDA first:  Actors speaking fluent Russian on stage!  For further information, go to www.dcda.info or call 907-895-5289.
