We have heard it said that the “economic downturn” has passed, yet we almost daily encounter folks still feeling the effects of the recession acutely. There is often mention of “safety nets”, and they do exist: too many to list them all herein.
Delta is not without “Safety nets”. Supplemental food programs are one element, and qualified applicants may receive food stamps from State Public Assistance. Federal USDA programs for families and Seniors bring to Delta and distribute TONS of food each year.
The Delta Community Food Pantry relies upon donors and contributors to keep the shelves filled with a variety of staples and canned goods. The generosity of residents and their concern for others eases the burden of those who may be feeling the economic squeeze or other misfortune.
The Boy Scout Council of the Midnight Sun in Fairbanks recently encouraged Troops to mount a campaign to collect canned goods and staples for local food banks.
Troop 56 in Delta heeded the call, and early in August a crew led by Scoutmaster Alan J. Levinson and including Dean Lambert, Luke Wilson, Taylor Levinson (Eagle Scout), and Joseph Mack delivered to the Delta Community Food Pantry 370 pounds of food to be distributed to those in need.
