North Haven to Sponsor 9th Army Band’s Annual Community Holiday Concert

FAIRBANKS, AK – The 9th Army Band will present its free annual holiday concert with support from North Haven Communities on December 20 at 7 p.m. in the Hering Auditorium at Lathrop High School.  A feature performance by the U.S. Army Alaska Arctic Warrior Band will include holiday music ranging from classic favorites to contemporary pieces.

The annual holiday concert dates back to 1995 when the Arctic Warrior Band was activated at Fort Wainwright and the event has become a tradition in the Fairbanks area.  A recent letter to the editor at the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner expressed disappointment over not having the holiday concert this year due to lack of sponsorship and urged the community to rally and lend support to the treasured event.  When North Haven Communities was made aware of the situation, it contacted the 9th Army Band and pledged its support help to event organizers continue an important community tradition.  AAFES, the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, also pledged support of the event.

“This celebration is our way of thanking each of you in the community for your support of your Army and our military. We also want to make sure to thank current military members, veterans, and family members for your hard work and sacrifice. Finally, we want to remember our colleagues currently deployed around the world protecting the freedoms each of us hold dear.  I promise a truly enjoyable and fun-filled evening for everyone who can attend,” said Chief Warrant Officer Jeffrey Price, Commander and Bandmaster of the U.S. Army Alaska Arctic Warrior Band.

The public is invited to celebrate the season.  Admission is free. The Hering Auditorium is located at 901 Airport Way, Fairbanks (beside Lathrop High School).  For more information, call the Fort Wainwright Public Affairs Office at 353-6701 or 353-6780.

Actus Lend Lease Closes $377 Million Privatization Initiative for Wainright and Greely Army Posts

Project To Enhance Quality of Life for North Haven Service Members and Families

Fairbanks and Delta Junction, Alaska – September 30, 2010 – Actus Lend Lease, one of the nation’s leaders in creating superior public-private community developments, today announced the successful financial closing of North Haven, the privatization project encompassing Forts Wainwright and Greely Army Posts.  The financial closing includes a $377 million Initial Development Plan that will span seven years and includes the development, construction, renovation and management of 1,815 homes over 50 years. North Haven also will build pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, community centers, playgrounds and a variety of other amenities.

Revitalization of community housing is part of the Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI), a critical component in the effort to eliminate inadequate housing and foster a better quality of life for U.S. Service Members and their families.  Upon completion, the project will construct 414 new homes and renovate 169 existing homes at Fort Wainwright and Fort Greely. The closing culminates several months of intense planning between Actus Lend Lease and the U.S. Army.

“This is an extremely exciting day not only for Actus Lend Lease and the Army, but for all the Soldiers and their families who call Forts Wainwright and Greely home,” said Marc Sierra, Actus Lend Lease managing director.  “The collaborative effort between Actus Lend Lease and the Army has been critical in reaching this extremely important milestone during a difficult financial time. We are looking forward to continuing this partnership with not only the Army but also the local community in helping to bring the highest quality homes and neighborhoods to Soldiers and their families.”

Actus Financial Close

An operational close was achieved at North Haven on April 1, 2009, allowing a 24-month partial mini-project to move forward, marking the start-up of approximately $42.59 million in construction work consisting of demolition, new construction and renovations at Forts Wainwright and Greely.

As part of the Actus Lend Lease commitment to environmental sustainability, new homes at North Haven are designed to be energy efficient and sustainable.  Innovative construction techniques to be utilized include the Remote Wall System, engineered by the Cold Climate Housing Research Center. The system includes triple-glazed casement windows and the “Cold Roof” design to prevent ice damning and minimize heat loss.  All new homes will be built to EnergyStar® requirements, meet LEED® Silver standards, utilize energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights, and have insulation values that exceed building and energy code requirements.

Since Wainwright and Greely see just hours of daylight during the winter months, special attention will be given to home designs, including bright colors, natural lighting, full-spectrum lighting in bathrooms and kitchens, and spacious living areas.

The largest organizational occupants at Fort Wainwright include U.S. Army Alaska and U.S. Army Garrison Alaska, which provides the headquarters function for the installation and the following nine major tenants: 1-25 Stryker Combat Team, Aviation Task Force 49, 507th Signal Company, Northern Warfare Training Center, 9th Army Band, Bassett Army Hospital, 3rd Air support Operations Squadron, Cold Regions Test Center, and the Bureau of Land Management.  Fort Greely Army Post is home to the 49th Missile Defense Command, Ground Based Midcourse Defense, Cold Regions Test Centers, and the Regional Installation Management Command.
