Delta Imagination Library

A small group of mothers, children and grandmothers gathered at the Delta Library to discuss the formation of the Delta/Greely branch of the Imagination Library. A Board of Directors was organized and the the project was launched.

The following is a quote from the Imagination Library’s home page, http://www.imagination library.com. “In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.”

Today over 700.000 children receive books free of charge every month. Now Delta/Greely youngsters will be able to join these other children.   Volunteers are needed to get this program underway. Join us on March 28 at 6:30 pm at the Delta Community Center for the next meeting. For more information see the Delta Imagination Library on facebook or contact Jasmine Wells @ jasminemwells@yahoo.com, Kristin Miller @kristinrene.miller@gmail.com, Olivia Downing @olivia.a. downing@gmail.com or Jessica Weber @ weberjf26@yahoo.com.

Delta News Web “the New Look”

As we journey into a new year, we decided to give the Delta News Web a little upgrade.

The Delta News Web was founded in 1999 and was formatted for a monitor screen width resolution of 800 pixels wide, pretty standard for the time, but kind of a dinosaur nowadays.  Most of you are using a screen width resolution of 1024 pixels or more.

This new format allows us to make a little better use of the page, and for you, it should be a little wider for you on your monitor with less empty space to the left and the right.

We rebuilt the classified ads page as well and hope you find it easier to navigate.

We want to thank every one of you for your loyalty and support over the years.  Quite a bit of what you see on the DNW is published with no monetary gain, but as a ministry to this nice little community.  Many of you, including our local photographers and other community services that keep us up to date with news and events,  make the DNW what it is.  We also want to thank those of you who support the news web with your paid advertisements.

Thank you Delta Junction and may the Lord continue to bless you this new year.

Please let us know if this new format has helped you with your viewing experience or if you are having any kind of problems with the new format. Email

The Midway Lodge Gets New Owners

Mark and Kimberly “Miki” Adams, former owners and operators of the very popular Adams’ Ribs BBQ and Mountainhouse Lodge in Delta Junction, bought the The Midway Lodge in Salcha, effective November 1st.   The new owners closed the restaurant briefly last week to give it a “facelift”, say Miki Adams, but reopened the lodge–whose name will remain the same— on Saturday, October 29.

The restaurant and lodge itself has good “bones” and established clientelle–we don’t want to turn it on a dime,” she said.  But she wanted to add a few personal touches and a more inviting décor that will give everyone s warm comfortable feeling of “home”.   Proprietors Mark and Miki Adams, both life-long Alaskans want to create a warm and inviting environment, with true Alaskan hospitality.  You’ll feel a sense of ease the moment you walk in the door. The setting will be warm, comfortable and inviting to the eyes. With soothing music kept at a level that encourages conversation. “No one is going to rush you from a table or a spot at the espresso bar (which will be coming soon)”.   In addition to changing the “mood”, another significant change is that  is that Midway Lodge is now completely smoke-free.

Miki hopes to make some other small, “improvements,” as they see them.  The menu, for instance, will include more “healthy food–less fried food and more cooked fish and poultry,” she said, adding, “And as soon as we find a smoker, our BBQ will definitely take front and center stage!”

The Adams also plan to serve a traditional, buffet-style Sunday brunch, starting in January 2012 featuring “baked goods and different egg dishes”.  It will be an important meal for the restaurant, going forward, Miki Adams says.

The price range for the food will be comparable to the restaurant’s current prices, with a Senior and Military discount.
Dinner entrées will range from around $12.95 to $23.95, with appetizers starting at $7.95.
Lunches will range from around $8 to around $13.

The Adams launched the re-tooled version of the restaurant on Saturday, October 29 but plan to have a re-Grand Opening celebration very soon.  Mark and Miki invite you to stop in and say hello, check out our new look, use the restroom, or just sit and visit!

Winter Hours:
Monday – Thursday 07:00 am to 9:00 pm
Friday – Saturday 07:00 am to 10:00 pm
Sunday 08:00 pm – 5:00 pm (grill closes at 4:00pm)

“Balance Act” by Adela Jackson

March First Friday Artist at S Salon and Studio and Featured Artist at the Bear Gallery Gift Shop

“Life is a balance. Is your life in balance or is it just an act? Each of us discovers the answer as we multi-task our way through life. We balance our careers with our family with time for ourselves. Each upset is an opportunity for growth. With it we discover what we need to keep our life in balance. We want to stay healthy, happy and hopeful.

All of nature is in balance to keep continuity in the cycle of life. Balance happens on a daily basis. By connecting to nature, we connect with ourselves. As we become centered and focused we find that our balance comes from within. In order for us to be the best of who we are we must maintain that balance.”

Local Alaskan artist and photographer Adela Jackson explores the struggle for balance that each of us deal with this time of year, when the temperature and light is constantly in a state of flux as is our well-being. Adela is the featured First Friday Artist at S Salon and Studio where her recent images of nature are on display. Winner of numerous awards for design and photography, Adela most recently received Best of Show in New Media at the Bear Gallery for her image titled, “Balance Act”.

Adela is also the featured Gift Shop Artist at the Bear Gallery for March. Her items for sale in the Gift Shop show an array of Adela’s interests and talents. Adela is probably most known for her best-selling book, “Best Recipes of Alaska’s Fishing Lodges” which was featured twice on QVC National Shopping Network.

Meet Adela this Friday, March 4 from 5-6 pm at the Pioneer Park Bear Gallery or from 6-9 pm at S Salon & Studio, 901 Cushman Street. You can visit Adela’s website at http://www.adela.cc

Alaska Artists Can Apply for the Rasmuson Awards

Dear Alaskan Artist:

Rasmuson Foundation continues its commitment to Alaskan artists by offering grants to artists of all disciplines and career stages. If you have not received an Individual Artist Award from Rasmuson Foundation in the last three years, then you may eligible to apply for one of three awards.

Project Awards of up to $5,000 will be awarded to support short-term projects that have a clear benefit to the artist and development of their work. Fellowship Awards of $12,000 are available to mid-career and mature artists working in choreography, folk/traditional arts, crafts, literary arts/scriptworks or performance art. One distinguished artist award of $25,000 will be given to a mature Alaska artist.

New this year are enhancements that will make submitting an application simpler, and expand eligibility to artists who perform existing works.

First, starting January 17, artists will be able to apply online at  www.rasmuson.org . Online applications must be filed by 11:59 p.m. on March 1. Paper applications will still be
accepted, and the postmark deadline is March 1.

And second, Presentation/Interpretation has been added as an eligible artistic discipline for artists who make use of existing work for the purpose of presentation or performance. This expands eligibility to dancers, actors, musicians, vocalists and others who are primarily performing artists.

Want to learn more about the grant application process, or ask questions about how you can improve a past grant application that did not receiving funding? Join us for one of three, free informational teleconferences. The teleconferences will be organized by artistic discipline:
