Flag Disposal

Among other functions and ceremonies that your local veterans group performs for the community is that of properly retiring flags of the United States that are no longer serviceable or worthy of display.

On Sunday, 31 July at 2PM, this flag retirement ceremony will be conducted at the American Legion/VFW Welcome and Information kiosk at the Delta Fair.  Please bring unserviceable National flagss to us there for proper disposal.

Even if you have no national flag to retire, please stop by the kiosk to observe the ceremony or simply to say “Hi” and acknowledge your awareness of the veterans group.  Thank you!

Memorial Day in Delta Junction 2011

A memorial Day observance at Rest Haven Cemetery on Monday was hosted by local American Legion Post 22, Post Commander Mr. Rick Tirrell coordinating.

It was a beautiful sunny day, and more than one hundred and twenty five persons attended. Promptly at noon, local Boy Scout Troops 56 and 11, along with Cub Scout Troop 76 impressively presented and posted the colors. The National Anthem was beautifully sung in a heartfelt manner by Ms Victoria Joslin.

Post Commander Tirrell welcomed the assembled crowd, and Chaplain Vanderhoff from Fort Greely made an opening prayer.

The Post Commander voiced some thoughts about the ritual Memorial Day poppies, followed by Mr. Mike Cassidy reading the traditional poem Flanders Field. Post 22 Chaplain Richard Souhrada read a poem penned by Jerry Williams, and Girl Scouts from Troops 305 and 94 treated us to a beautifully sung My Country ’Tis Of Thee.

Judith Farrow recited an original poem, and then read an essay about the National Anthem written by Issac Asimov, Ph.D.

A prayer by retired Pastor Richard Carpenter was followed by a recital by Past Post Commander Bob Edwards of the names of local veterans deceased the past year–each name uttered was accompanied by the mournful tolling of a bell.

A prayer by Chaplain Cepeda from Fort Greely was followed by the traditional “Taps” with duet echo, played by Mr. Ben Cepeda and Post Chaplain Richard Souhrada.

Thus came to a close the 2011 Memorial Day Observance hosted by American Legion Post 22, Mr. Rick Tirrell Commander, now a Delta Tradition. Thank you for attending and participating! If you didn’t, please plan to do so next year.

Saturday Speechifyin'

On Saturday evening local American Legion Post 22 sponsored and conducted a speech contest where the winners were awarded scholarship monies as prizes.

High School students, both Public and Home-schooled, were required to speak to observers, friends, family and Judges about some aspect of the U. S. constitution, and the rights and obligations of citizens in reference to that document.  Orations were required to be eight to ten minutes in duration…not as easy as it sounds as described here!

One winner moves on to a similar competition if Fairbanks–the winner of that contest will compete in a State competition in Anchorage, and then, if victorious,  on to the NATIONALS in Indiana where the first place winner will be awarded $18,000 in scholarship monies.  High school students may compete in this oratorical contest each year until graduation.

Each of these serial contests are presented and underwritten by the American Legion, a National Veterans Organization.

Saturday saw Matthew Joslin win a $500 scholarship and an invitation to Fairbanks.  Ms Stacy Krepel was awarded a $250 scholarship, and John Warren earned a $100  scholarship.  Dean Davis placed fourth in the contest.

It was a great evening, featuring aspiring young people, and presented by your local American Legion Post 22, and coordinated by Mr Rick Tirrell.

Watching these young men and women produce and perform was a privilege and a pleasure!  If you missed out this year, join us in 2012.
