American Legion Annouces Their Scholarship Winners

Erica Kelly, First Place winner in the Delta competition traveled to Fairbanks on Saturday, February 4  for the next level of the National competition and out of five contestants she placed third in Fairbanks.

Delta Junction American Legion Post #22 held its annual speech contest at the Public Library on the 31st of January.

Three local students gave speeches about the US Constitution with an emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to the government.  The presentations were well prepared and presented to an enthusiastic group of spectators.

Four local judges scored the 8 to 10 minute orators and tension mounted as the crowd anticipated the results.  After a 15 minute deliberation, the Commander of the American Legion announced that Erica Kelly, a High School sophomore, won 1st place.  She will receive a $500 scholarship and compete in the next level of competition in Fairbanks on the 4th of Feb.   Second place went to John Warren also a sophomore.  He will receive a $250 scholarship in addition to the Scholarship money he won in last year’s competitions here.  In Fairbanks and at the State competition in Anchorage.    Third place went to Dean Davis, a junior, who will receive a $100 scholarship.

The local American Legion Post #22 would like to thank all those who helped make this competition the great success it was.    Students who will be in grades 9 – 12 next year should start preparing their speeches for next year’s program.

If anyone has questions or would like to help or participate in next year’s competition please contact Rick Tirrell, American Legion Post #22, Commander at 895-1039.

Ward Off W-2 Worries

Be Wary of Tax-Related Requests and Offers

Anchorage, Alaska – Feb. 6, 2012 – As sealed W-2s arrive, Better Business Bureau warns that sensitive information—such as Social Security numbers, incomes and addresses, as well as employer identification numbers—could be at risk if forms fall into the wrong hands.

Employers file Form W-2s—or Wage and Tax Statements—to report employees’ wages and withheld income taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration and their employees. Before April’s tax filing deadline, consumers should be wary of:

·         Verification Requests: IRS and SSA impersonators send fake emails, letters and make phone calls to “verify” W-2 details. Some solicitations ask consumers to send forms by mail or upload W-2s on websites in order to capture personal identifiers.

·         Special Offers: Tax return preparers advertise sales, discounts and incentives for those who agree to bring in W-2s, but problems arise when those preparers are unqualified or untrustworthy. Untrained staff could botch filings; or worse, corrupt employees may be collecting details to commit identity fraud.

·         Thefts: Intruders know when W-2s are ripe to arrive in mailboxes. They also know that some consumers carelessly store forms in unsecured locations.

BBB serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington returns to tax safeguards:

Beware of phishing. If requests are unsolicited, do not release personal data. The IRS and SSA do not use email or social media sites to initiate W-2 collections. W-2 forms are submitted by employers—not taxpayers—and the IRS sends letters—not emails—when it needs more details. Report tax phishing scams to the IRS.

Don’t be persuaded by gifts and gimmicks. Be wary of big refund promises, Refund Anticipation Loans and tax preparation schemes. Before redeeming offers, read confidentiality agreements, privacy policies and other fine print.

Verify credentials. Confirm reliability with IRS tips and check out “Tax Return Preparation” companies at bbb.org.

Store W-2s in safe locations. Avoid leaving important paperwork and W-2s in unsecured places—such as work offices, common living areas, vehicles and unlocked mailboxes; quickly relocate files to locked safes or secure file cabinets. If records are stored online, always password-protect computers and activate anti-virus software.

Clear out old files. After tax season, shred unneeded documents at BBB’s Secure Your ID Day on April 21, 2012: alaska.bbb.org/secure-your-id/.

Weekly Gas Updates

Alaska, February 6- Average retail gasoline prices in Alaska have risen 5.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $4.00/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.43/g, according to gasoline price website AlaskaGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Alaska during the past week, prices yesterday were 48.5 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 9.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 10.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 31.9 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

“The national average has continued on its upward trend as we move closer to spring and EPA-mandated cleaner burning gasoline,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “The smaller movements in gasoline prices as of late in areas of the country will certainly not hold much longer. Gasoline prices tend to start moving significantly higher towards the end of February and into mid-March, so motorists should be preparing for higher prices,” DeHaan said.

About AlaskaGasPrices.com

GasBuddy operates AlaskaGasPrices.com and over 250 similar websites that track gasoline prices at over 140,000 gasoline stations in the United States and Canada. In addition, GasBuddy offers a free smartphone app which has been downloaded over 20 million times to help motorists find gasoline prices in their area.
