East Volkmar Wildfire

Date: 2011-05-30 00:00:00

http://inciweb.org/incident/2253/

East Volkmar Fire

(Delta) A large storm cell passed northeast of the fire in the afternoon causing active fire behavior and major fire growth to the east and northeast in Bear Creek drainage, its tributaries, and surrounding mountains. The northern most section of the fire is 1 mile from the South Fork of the Goodpaster between Columbia and Bear Creeks. The eastern perimeter remains west of Michigan Creek.

Four loads of aerial retardant were utilized on the west flank on Sunday where firefighters worked to prevent fire spread toward Volkmar Lake. This flank is currently holding. Preventing fire spread into the Goodpaster River drainage is also a priority. There are 201 personnel assigned to the fire which was mapped at 16,000 acres.

The storm cells that affected the fire also pelted other areas with lightning on Sunday afternoon. Delta Area Forestry posted lookouts and conducted an aerial detection flight and will continue to search for new wildfire starts. The rain received in the Delta Junction area was not widespread.

In spite of the East Volkmar Fire, extreme fire danger indices, and a suspension of open burning, Forestry continues to respond to unauthorized and dangerous debris burns and bon-fires. Residents must not light yard burns at this time. The only fires allowed are small cooking fires 2-3 feet in diameter that are located in a fire ring surrounded by dirt, sand, or gravel. Never light fires during windy conditions. The campfire must be attended with water and tools until it is completely extinguished.

WEATHER FOR MONDAY TEMPERATURES: 75F HUMIDITY: 32% WINDS: WEST 10-15mph

ISOLATED AFTERNOON AND EVENING THUNDERSTORMS TODAY. GUSTY WINDS IN THE AFTERNOON.

Mystery Photo Winner for May 18 thru 25

The winner of last week’s mystery photo is Abigail Ruse

We had 9 correct entries this week.

Abigail will receive a gift certificate from the Buffalo Center Drive-In, courtesy of John and Linda Sloan

Our mystery photo must have been a little challenging this week.  There were many guesses for this one, but they were incorrect.  We had entries for Jack’s Chevron and Buffalo Service Station.

The mystery photo this week is at the McNabb’s Interior Diesel. It is a big white sign on the right-hand side of the front of the building.

What’s Playing at the Movies Fort Greely

Friday, May 27 – 7pm Diary of Wimpy Kid (PG)
Saturday, May 28 – 7pm Hop (PG)
Sunday, May 29 – 7pm Limitless (PG-13)

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID
Hapless preteen Greg Heffley endures bullies, swirlies, morons, and wedgies while navigating the treacherous world of middle school and recording his traumas in his personal journal in this familyoriented comedy inspired by author Jeff Kinney’s best-selling series of illustrated novels. Try as he might, Greg just can’t understand who thought it was a good idea to place kids who haven’t even hit their first growth spurt in the same school as kids who get a fiveo’clock shadow by lunch time. Realizing that he’ll have to get creative if he hopes to survive until high school, Greg concocts a series of get-cool-quick schemes that all go hopelessly awry. Despite the fact that he’s viewed as a dork by his peers, Greg never loses hope that someday, when all is said and done, he’ll be able to look back on his middle school experiences and laugh. Rated PG 94 min

LIMITLESS
An action-thriller about a writer who takes an experimental drug that allows him to use 100 percent of his mind. As one man evolves into the perfect version of himself, forces more corrupt than he can imagine mark him for assassination. Out-of-work writer Eddie Morra’s (Cooper) rejection by girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) confirms his belief that he has zero future. That all vanishes the day an old friend introduces Eddie to NZT, a designer pharmaceutical that makes him laser focused and more confident than any man alive. Now on an NZT-fueled odyssey, everything Eddie’s read, heard or seen is instantly organized and available to him. As the former nobody rises to the top of the financial world, he draws the attention of business mogul Carl Van Loon (De Niro), who sees this enhanced version of Eddie as the tool to make billions. Rated PG-13 105 min

HOP
Jobless slacker Fred (James Marsden) discovers that hares make horrible houseguests after injuring the Easter Bunny (Russell Brand) and agreeing to nurse the little hopper back to health in this animated comedy from the writers of Despicable Me, and director Tim Hill (Rocko’s Modern Life, SpongeBob SquarePants). For the past 4,000 years, the Easter Bunny has brought joy and candy to kids all across the globe; however, the time has come for a new Easter Bunny to take over the tradition. Rated PG 90 min

These events are open to all Fort Greely Soldiers, Family Members, DA Civilians and Contractors who currently have access to the Installation.

I took this photo in Cordova while visiting friends. Photo Courtesy Jessica Lambert

Cordova is a uniquely Alaskan community, shaped by its dramatic natural setting, rich cultural heritage, and colorful residents. It is a working town, nestled in the heart of a spectacular wilderness, that still looks to the ocean and forests for its livelihood. 3,000 Mile “Greater than Graves” Bike Trek to Stop in Delta

Contact:  Michaela Cui (603)978-4282
Kimberly Dorris (877)643-3123, ext 101 or kimberly@ngdf.org

Most new college graduates look forward to trading final exams and term papers for some well-earned leisure time.  But Michaela Cui, who graduated in May from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in aerospace engineering, will instead be tackling an even bigger challenge:  a 45-day, 3000-mile bicycle trip.

Cui, along with fellow graduates Ben Weerts and Chris Doudna, will kick off this unique journey in Anchorage on June 1st and will conclude 45 days later in San Francisco, CA.  The group expects to arrive in Delta Junction on Wednesday, June 8th.  The ride will serve to raise funds and awareness for the Graves’ Disease & Thyroid Foundation.

In 2010, Cui was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease, an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland to make too much thyroid hormone, causing hyperthyroidism.  Additional immune targets may include the connective tissue cells surrounding the eyes and the skin located on the front of the shin.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism can include rapid heartbeat, heart palpitations, unexplained weight loss, increased appetite, restlessness, decreased attention span, shortness of breath, fatigue, insomnia, heat intolerance, increased perspiration, frequent bowel movements, and lighter menstrual periods.  Signs of eye involvement can include dry eyes, swelling, redness, eyelid retraction, a “gritty” sensation, bulging (proptosis), and double vision.

Because the symptoms of Graves’ Disease can mimic other health conditions, patients may have a difficult time receiving a proper diagnosis and timely treatment.  In Cui’s case, rapid weight loss initially led her doctors to believe she was suffering from anorexia.  Complications of improperly treated Graves’ disease include heart failure, osteoporosis, severe emotional disorders, and thyroid storm, which can be fatal.

The initial spark for the “Greater Than Graves’” ride began when Cui was in the early stages of treatment.  “I began to feel alone and uncertain of my future,” Cui recalls.  “So I decided to do something about it and focus my energies on building awareness and understanding of this disease that affects so many people.”  Cui says that doctors have given her the final go-ahead to participate, “provided that I wear goofy goggles or big sunglasses to protect my eyes!”

To read Cui’s blog, follow her progress in real time, or make a contribution, please visit the Greater Than Graves’ web site at www.greaterthangraves.com

Charities: Who Is Knocking on the Door?

Anchorage, Alaska – May 24, 2011 – Whether providing aid after natural disasters or assisting a neighbor in need, consumers want to say “yes” when someone knocks on the door seeking help. 65 percent of households in the U.S. donate to charities, according to The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

There are 1.2 million charitable organizations in the nation, according to Give USA 2010. Sadly, scammers rely on this abundance to deceive philanthropists.

Door-to-door charitable solicitations increase in summer months; BBB reminds consumers that while many are legitimate, some are schemes in disguise:

  • Providing for Protectors: It’s nearly impossible to say “no” to solicitors for police, fireman or veterans associations; scammers often use those who serve and protect to entice donors. Confirm affiliation with your local veterans, firefighters or police organizations.
  • Helping Kids: Often under the guise of “job training,” young adults sell magazine subscriptions or other items, as they strive towards trips, prizes or better futures. If interested, ask for written details and proof of program participation, get all refund and return policies, and research the company on your own.

Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington gives the tools necessary to build a wise giving community:

Take time to ask questions. How much money goes to the cause? Can I get the organization contact information and think about it? Is the charity a registered 501(c)(3) organization?

Check first. Ask solicitors for identification; most charities provide workers with badges or business cards. Using trusted directory information, contact the charity directly to verify their employment or volunteer status.

Make a plan. Choose a charity before it chooses you. Consider selecting organizations to support before doing a monthly or annual budget.  Before donating, review bbb.org/us/charity for free BBB Charity Reviews.

Don’t donate cash. Make sure checks are written to the organization, not the individual knocking on the door. Ask for a receipt for tax purposes.

For more charity savviness, visit bbb.org.

Events That Took Place in our Community

Delta Junction was a very busy place last Saturday, May 21. It was a warm/sunny day and  many people supported both events that took place.

Community members and different organizations met at the Visitor’s Center at 8:30am and cleaned up the garbage that accumulated over the long winter months.  Thank you to each one that showed up to help make our town beautiful. A BBQ was served for those who participated in clean up.

The Alaska Law Enforcement Torch Run and Pledge Drive helped benefit Special Olympics.

The 5K run started at the Delta Junction Visitors Center and continued east on the Alaska Highway to Emmaus Road and back to the Visitors Center.

1.7 Cummings Road Fire contained; mop-up begins

DIVISION OF FORESTRY WILDLAND FIRE INCIDENT RELEASE
May 21, 2011

1.7 Cummings Road Fire
Provided By: Tim Ellis, Public Information Officer
Contact Phone Number: (907) 895-4225

(Delta Junction, AK) – Now that the 1.7 Cummings Road Fire has been contained, the Forestry Division this weekend will begin reassigning most of the 65 firefighters and several pieces of equipment assigned to the 27.3-acre wildfire southeast of Delta.

Remaining crews will continue mop-up work on the fire through the coming days, dousing hotspots and ensuring the fire is completely extinguished.

An investigation continues into the cause of the fire, which was located about 35 miles southeast of Delta.

Continued warm, dry weather and windy conditions have prompted Delta-area fire officials to elevate the fire-danger level to extreme. Due to similar conditions throughout the Interior, the National Weather Service issued red-flag warnings today that were scheduled to expire late tonight. The weather service forecasts possible thunderstorms and showers over the weekend.

While red flag warnings are in effect, no outdoor burning is permitted, except for small warming fires that are contained in a fire ring and small trash fires in properly equipped burn barrels. Both should be carefully monitored.

Burning permits are suspended until further notice.
