World Eskimo-Indian Olympics (WEIO)

The first World Eskimo Olympics was held in Fairbanks in 1961 drawing contestants and dance teams from Barrow, Unalakleet, Tanana, Fort Yukon, Noorvik and Nome. The event was a big success and has been held annually ever since.

For time immemorial, Native peoples of the circumpolar areas of the world have gathered in small villages to participate in games of strength, endurance, balance, and agility. Along with these athletic games, dancing, storytelling, and other audience participation games took place. This provided an opportunity for friendly competition, entertainment and laughter. The hosts provided food and lodging, and visitors brought news from surrounding villages and expanded opportunities for challenge building and renewing old and new friendships. This is the background of the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics and the atmosphere, which we seek to replicate.

BBB Provides Homeowners with Reliable Home Improvement Tools

Anchorage, Alaska – July 13, 2010 – Summer is a peak time for home improvement projects and Better Business Bureau is arming consumers with tools to avoid common remodeling troubles. According to BBB’s second quarter statistics (April through June 2010), the following home improvement categories were among Alaska’s top 20 most-inquired-about industries:
#1 Contractors – General (Also tied for third for most-complaint-about industries.)
#4 Roofing Contractors
#8 Construction & Remodeling Services
#9 Heating & Air Conditioning
#11 Painting Contractors
#13 Plumbing Contractors
#15 Landscape Contractors
#16 Heating Contractors
#17 Contractors – Electrical
#18 Excavating Contractors

Common Scams. BBB serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington warns of:
- “Traveling Handymen” – Beware of unknown solicitors who show up at the doorstep promising home or yard repair for a low day rate. They may ask for money up-front, and then disappear—leaving jobs incomplete.
- “Extra Materials” – Don’t trust repair solicitors who claim they’ve got leftover materials from working on a neighbor’s home. They guarantee a good deal and perform the work, but then demand a higher payment. In other scams, they collect a full payment and ditch out mid-project.
- “#1 Contractor” – Be careful with contractors who embellish qualifications, but aren’t properly licensed or offer poor workmanship.

Caution Signs. Steer clear of contractors and remodelers that:
- Use high pressure sales tactics and aggressive limited time offers.
- Show up on foot or in unmarked vehicles. Legitimate repair businesses usually use trucks featuring their company logo or decal.
- Refuse to provide a written bid or estimate.
- Demand a full payment up-front.

Home Improvement Tips. Do research first.
- Check licensing. Alaska businesses are required to have a business license and many Alaska home remodeling industries are required to have professional licensing. Verify proper state licensing at www.commerce.state.ak.us/occ/ .
- For a listing of pre-screened remodelers, check BBB’s Accredited Business Directory; BBB verifies proper licensing and other details.

Delta News Web Updates

You can tell summer is here when things aren’t getting done in a timely manner. I apologize for the last week with the sporadic updates. I have had family up from the lower 48 and we went to Valdez for four days, camped, fished and took in the sights.

Last night, you know how Alaska Airlines thinks the only time you can leave Alaska on a plane is at 1:00am or later. That was me last night. Didn’t get home until 3am, so that was the reason for the late updates this morning.

I appreciate all the photos and things that have come in the last 5 days. I am working on each email this morning and will get everything posted today.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Hope each and everyone of you are having a fabulous summer. – Webmaster

Are Your Kids Protected From Identity Theft

Anchorage, Alaska – July 7, 2010 – Identity theft is an ever-increasing threat to all consumers, but many don’t think about the threat to their kids.

Children, teenagers and some young adults make particularly good targets because:
- They have “unblemished” credit records, or often no credit history at all.
- Once their identity is stolen, it can go undetected for months—if not years.
- They are likely to be unaware of identity theft signs.

What can parents to do protect their teens and pre-teens? Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington offers these tips:
- Ask questions when personal information is requested. Schools, athletic teams, extracurricular activities and pediatric offices routinely request children’s Social Security numbers or birth certificates for registration purposes. Before providing ask: Is this required? Who will have access to the information and how will it be stored? If you do not like the answers, don’t provide the data.
- Securely store Social Security cards. Don’t carry your child’s Social Security card in your wallet or purse and do not permit your teen to do so.
- Identify ID card troubles. Advise teens to avoid listing Social Security numbers on student IDs and other forms of identification.
- Teach financial wisdom. When a teen opens their first checking account or applies for their first credit card, discuss safeguarding checks and bank account numbers. Show them how to monitor accounts for suspicious activities. Advise teens to only carry what is absolutely necessary in wallets or purses.
- Advise of phone phonies. Talk to teens about not giving out personal and financial information in response to phone calls, telemarketers, text messages and e-mails from unknown individuals or businesses.
- Instruct on Internet safety. Stress the importance of not divulging personal information, phone numbers and addresses to online acquaintances through e-mails and on social networking sites. Help them review privacy settings.
- Discuss safeguarding strategies before kids leave the nest. Talk about dorm and apartment storage and how to avoid “prying eyes” of roommates, friends and visitors.
- Check credit reports annually for free. Visit http://www.annualcreditreport.com/ .
- Teach teens to shred unneeded personal documents. At BBB’s free Secure Your ID Day, Shred Alaska will shred up to three file boxes or grocery bags of paper per person.

Happy Independence Day

Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation’s heritage, laws, history, society, and people.
Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades often are in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares.

Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner”, “God Bless America”, “America the Beautiful”, “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, “This Land Is Your Land”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”, and, regionally, “Yankee Doodle” in northeastern states and “Dixie” in southern states. Some of the lyrics recall images of the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812.

Firework shows are held in many states, and many fireworks are sold for personal use or as an alternative to a public show. Safety concerns have led some states to ban fireworks or limit the sizes and types allowed. Illicit traffic transfers many fireworks from less restrictive states.

A salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called a “salute to the union,” is fired on Independence Day at noon by any capable military base.

Tea at the Sullivan Roadhouse and Garden

Dear Editor:

Click on the image for a photo enlargement. – Photos Courtesy Kathy Trim

I wish to thank so many in the Delta Community who made the Tea at the Sullivan Roadhouse and Garden a successful fundraiser for two very worthy causes; the Delta Senior Housing Project and the preservation and maintenance of the Sullivan Roadhouse and garden. The event raised $900! 85% or $765 will be donated to the Deltana Community Services Partnership for the Delta Senior Housing Project. The remaining 15% or $135 will be given to the Chamber for the Sullivan Roadhouse.

First of all, thank you to the Delta Chamber of Commerce for allowing us to use the Roadhouse which created the nicest atmosphere for the tea. Much appreciation goes to John and Linda Sloan for letting us use the drive-in kitchen to prepare the tea sandwiches and use some of their space in their awesome walk- in cooler!

Acacia Floral sold the tickets for us and donated beautiful flowers that filled a teapot and tea cup that were used to decorate some of the tables. Lisa and Bridget, I truly appreciate your support and generosity.

Whitestone Farms donated flowering plants from the greenhouse to fill our pots used for door prizes. The ladies loved them, Kevin! Thank you.

Thanks to Audrey Murphy who gave us two lovely crocheted doilies that she made to include among our door prizes; so “very tea!” The winners were delighted, Audrey.

I am always impressed by the positive, willingness to serve attitudes of our Delta students and this time was no exception. Young ladies from the Delta High School National Honor Society and Fort Greely National Junior Honor Society happily came to the tea, dressed up, ready to serve. Not one of them complained about going back and forth to the drive-in kitchen to pick up food while it rained that day. They carefully carried covered tiered trays and delivered them to the tea ladies. Upon uncovering the trays, many ooh’s and ah’s were expressed at the presentation. Stacey and Valerie Krepel, Shana Wilburn, Samantha Trainor, Katy Dighton, Kari Olsen and Thea Levinson impressed all the ladies with their kindness and caring attitudes. Great job!

We were also blessed with the musical talents of Rachelle Stebbins who played beautiful music on the old piano at the Sullivan, as she accompanied flutist, Valerie Krepel with tea music. It was a very special touch that everyone enjoyed.

Linda Mereness came dressed in a wonderful tea outfit and hat and greeted people at the door. It was so good to have you there, Linda and you looked absolutely stunning! Thank you so much for helping.

Christy, Lou Ann and Carol you guys are the best! Thank you from my heart for providing china, silverware, linens, serving pieces and donating and preparing all of the tea food and treats with me. I could not have done it without you. Your talents and creativity and willingness to serve means so much to me. Thank you!

Lastly, I’d like to thank all of the people in the Delta Community who came to the tea. Your generosity and support is very much appreciated by all of us. By the way ladies, those tea hats were great!

Until our next tea,
Kathy Trim

United States Army Air Corps

The United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) was a forerunner of the United States Air Force. Created on July 2, 1926 as part of the United States Army, it was also the predecessor of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), established in 1941. Although abolished as an organization in 1942, the Air Corps (AC) remained as a branch of the Army until 1947.
The Air Corps was created by the United States Congress from the Air Service largely as a compromise between advocates of a separate air arm and those of the Army high command who viewed the aviation arm as an auxiliary branch to support the ground forces. Although its members worked to promote the concept of airpower and an autonomous air force between 1926 and 1941, as a branch of the Army (similar to the Signal Corps or Quartermaster Corps) its primary purpose by Army policy remained support of ground forces rather than independent operations.

On March 1, 1935, still struggling with the issue of a separate air arm, the Army activated the General Headquarters Air Force (GHQ Air Force), a command element conceived in 1924 and inactive since its creation in 1933, for centralized control of aviation combat units within the continental United States. GHQ Air Force reported directly to the Chief of Staff of the Army until November 19, 1940, when it became subordinate to Army General Headquarters (Army GHQ) after that headquarters was activated. The separation of the Air Corps from control of its combat units caused problems of unity of command that became more acute as the Air Corps enlarged in preparation for World War II. This was resolved by the creation of the Army Air Forces on June 20, 1941, when both the Air Corps and GHQ Air Force (renamed Air Force Combat Command) became subordinate to a new higher echelon.

The Air Corps ceased to be an administrative organization on March 9, 1942. It remained as a branch of the Army until 1947, however, and the overwhelming majority of personnel assigned to the AAF were members of the Air Corps.
