Alaskans Call on Murkowski to End Energy Bill Distractions

Alaska Clean Energy Works Director Pat Lavin has released the following statement regarding Senator Murkowski’s visit to the White House this week to discuss how to move the nation forward on energy issues. After the meeting, Murkowski contended that a move to reduce carbon emissions, which she has long said she supports, “will not sell in this country.”
“Poll after poll has demonstrated strong support for reducing pollution and investing in cleaner energy sources, especially since the BP disaster in the Gulf,” said Lavin. “Americans absolutely support action to do that. It will lead to more energy security for Alaskans and will create the market conditions necessary to finally build an Alaska natural gas pipeline. Just saying no only benefits special interests who like the status quo. Instead of partisan doomsaying, Senator Murkowski should seek solutions that help develop Alaska’s renewable energy sources and natural gas, create jobs and reduce our dependence on oil.”

Lavin is available for on-camera, in-person, or over-the-phone interviews.

GI Bill for the 21st Century Signed Into Law (2008)

The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 is Title V of the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2008, Pub.L. 110-252, H.R. 2642 , an Act of Congress which became law on June 30, 2008. The act amended Part III of Title 38, United States Code to include a new Chapter 33, which expands the educational benefits for military veterans who have served since September 11, 2001. At various times the new education benefits have been referred to as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the 21st Century G.I. Bill of Rights, or the Webb G.I. Bill, with many current references calling it simply the new G.I. Bill

The law is an effort to pay for veterans’ college expenses to a similar extent that the original G.I. Bill did after World War II. The main provisions of the act include funding 100% of a public four-year undergraduate education to a veteran who has served three years on active duty since September 11, 2001. The act also provides the ability for the veteran to transfer benefits to a spouse or children after serving (or agreeing to serve) ten years.

The act was originally proposed by Virginia Senator Jim Webb, who introduced the original form of the bill in January 2007 as his first legislative proposal. Webb hoped that these benefits would help current veterans as much as the original G.I. Bill helped the Greatest Generation in shaping America.

The law’s provisions came into effect on August 1, 2009.

Pancakes for Parental Rights Fundraiser Great Success

Click on the photo for an enlargement.

Supporters of Parental Rights conducted a successful pancake fundraiser at the Community Center Saturday, June 26. Pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee were served to well over 100 people and $1,472. was raised for Alaskans for Parental Rights.

Last winter Delta was one of the first communities in our state to gather enough signatures to petition the state to put parental rights on the ballot August 24. Almost 40,000 signatures were gathered around the state from people who want to restore the rights of parents. The money earned selling pancakes will help buy bumper stickers and yard signs and distribute information about this very important vote.

In 1998 the legislature passed a law guaranteeing parents the right to consent before an abortion is performed on their minor daughters. The Alaska Supreme Court prevented the law from being enforced for ten years before announcing they had determined it was unconstitutional. It seems they felt the right to privacy was being infringed upon for girls as young as 12 and 13. Alaskans have been rightly outraged at this latest power grab by our courts and the vote on Ballot Measure 2 on August 24 is their chance to correct this blatant error by the judiciary. Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business is fighting tooth and nail to prevent the restoration of parental rights. Ballot Measure 2 will give parents the right to be notified, not consent, in order to avoid another lockdown by the courts.
Special Thanks to the following for their help in putting together the Pancake Fundraiser:

Delta Meat and Sausage, Northern Lights Dairy, IGA, Senator John Coghill, Rynnieva Moss, everyone at Clearwater Baptist Church, and Don Haase, candidate for the District 12 House seat. You can donate online at http://www.alaskansforparentalrights.org/.

Korean War Began (1950)

The Korean War (1950–53) was a military conflict between the Republic of Korea, supported by the United Nations, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and People’s Republic of China (PRC), with air support from the Soviet Union.

The war began on 25 June 1950 and an armistice was signed on 27 July 1953. The war was a result of the political division of Korea by agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War. The Korean peninsula had been ruled by Japan prior to the end of the war.

In 1945, following the surrender of Japan, American administrators divided the peninsula along the 38th parallel, with United States troops occupying the southern part and Soviet troops occupying the northern part. The failure to hold free elections throughout the Korean Peninsula in 1948 deepened the division between the two sides, and the North established a Communist government.

The 38th Parallel increasingly became a political border between the two Koreas. Although reunification negotiations continued in the months preceding the war, tension intensified. Cross-border skirmishes and raids at the 38th Parallel persisted. The situation escalated into open warfare when North Korean forces invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950. It was the first significant armed conflict of the Cold War.

The United Nations, particularly the United States, came to the aid of the South Koreans in repelling the invasion.

Mystery Photo for Week June 15 – 22

The winner of last week’s mystery photo is Flower Cole
We had 15 correct entries last week.

Flower will receive a gift certificate from the Buffalo Center Drive-In, courtesy of John and Linda Sloan

The mystery photo was part of the bench sitting on the deck of Buffalo Center Drive-In. The Group “W” Bench was a song by Arlo Guthrie called Alice’s Restaurant

Arlo’s most famous work is “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree”, a talking blues song that lasts 18 minutes and 34 seconds in its original recorded version. Guthrie has pointed out that this was also the exact length of one of the famous gaps in Richard Nixon’s Watergate tapes. He has been known to spin the story out to forty-five minutes in concert. The Alice in the song is Alice Brock, who now runs an art gallery[3] in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The song, a bitingly satirical protest against the Vietnam War draft, although Guthrie stated in a 2009 interview with Ron Bennington that Alice’s Restaurant is more an “anti-stupidity” song than an anti-war song, is based on a true incident. In the song, Guthrie is called up for a draft examination, and rejected as unfit for military service as a result of a criminal record — consisting in its entirety of a single arrest, court appearance, fine and clean-up order for littering and creating a public nuisance on Thanksgiving Day in 1965, when Arlo was eighteen years old. On the DVD commentary for the film, Guthrie states that the events as presented in the song are true to real-life occurrences.

For a short period of time after its release in 1967, “Alice’s Restaurant” was heavily played on U.S. college and counter-culture radio stations. It became a symbol of the late 1960s and for many it defined an attitude and lifestyle that were lived out across the country in the ensuing years. Many stations across the States have made playing “Alice’s Restaurant” a Thanksgiving Day tradition.

GI Bill Signed in Law (1944)

The G.I. Bill (officially titled Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, P.L. 78-346, 58 Stat. 284m) was an omnibus bill that provided college or vocational education for returning World War II veterans (commonly referred to as G.I.s) as well as one year of unemployment compensation. It also provided many different types of loans for returning veterans to buy homes and start businesses. Since the original act, the term has come to include other veteran benefit programs created to assist veterans of subsequent wars as well as peacetime service.

On June 22, 1944, President Franklin Delanor Roosevelt signed into law the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the GI Bill of Rights. By the time the original GI Bill ended in July 1956, 7.8 million World War II veterans had participated in an education or training program and 2.4 million veterans had home loans backed by the Veterans’ Administration (VA). Today, the legacy of the original GI Bill lives on in the Montgomery GI Bill.

Pledge of Allegiance Recognized by Congress (1942)

The Pledge of Allegiance of the United States is an oath of loyalty to the national flag and the republic of the United States of America, originally composed by Francis Bellamy in 1892. The Pledge has been modified four times since then, with the most recent change adding the words “under God” in 1954. The Pledge is predominantly sworn by children in public schools in response to state laws requiring the Pledge to be offered. Congressional sessions open with the swearing of the Pledge, as do government meetings at local levels, meetings held by the Royal Rangers, Boy Scouts of America, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Freemasons and their concordant bodies, other organizations, and some sporting events.

The current version of the Pledge of Allegiance reads: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

According to the United States Flag Code, the Pledge “should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute.”

In 1923 the National Flag Conference called for the words “my Flag” to be changed to “the Flag of the United States”, for the benefit of new immigrants. The words “of America” were added a year later. The United States Congress officially recognized the Pledge as the official national pledge on June 22, 1942.

Father's Day – June 20

Father’s Day is a celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting.

It is also celebrated to honor and commemorate our fathers and forefathers.

Father’s Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities.

The first observance of Father’s Day is believed to have been held on June 19, 1910 through the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After listening to a church sermon at Spokane’s Central Methodist Episcopal Church in 1909 about the newly recognized Mother’s Day, Dodd felt strongly that fatherhood needed recognition, as well. She wanted a celebration that honored fathers like her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who was left to raise his family alone when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child.

Dodd was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father’s Day observance to honor all fathers. Enlisting help from the Spokane Ministerial Association in 1909, she arranged for the celebration of fatherhood in Spokane.

On June 19, 1910, young members of the YMCA went to church wearing roses: a red rose to honor a living father, and a white rose to honor a deceased one. Dodd traveled through the city in a horse-drawn carriage, carrying gifts to shut-in fathers.

Father's Day Gift Tips from BBB

Make Pop Proud and Shop Smart for Father’s Day Finds

With Father’s Day on Sunday, June 20, Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington provides shopping tips and ideas when purchasing for pop:

Gift Cards and Certificates: Check for expiration dates and usability online.

Electronic Gadgets: Cameras, GPS’, phones, watches, music players, DVDs…

Don’t remove electronics or similar products from boxes before wrapping, as the original packaging may be required for a return.

Recreational Rentals: ATVs, campers, canoes, kayaks, motorcycles…

Make sure written contracts include base rental cost, daily fees, insurance, and other details such as time restrictions. Visually inspect the rental and get written proof of any existing damage before leaving the business.

Guides, Tours and Classes: Fishing, sightseeing, skydiving, golf lessons…

Get details in writing. Understand:

1. Total costs and features. What services and equipment are included? Ensure taxes, service, single supplement and other charges are clearly disclosed.

2. Restrictions and conditions. Asterisks are commonly used to indicate restrictions, such as additional charges and time requirements. Look for a “conditions” clause. Read the small print to see if it alters the original offer.

3. Cancellation and refund policies. Get these in writing. Are there any cancellation penalties? What is considered a valid cancellation reason for the buyer or the operator? Under what conditions is a full refund available?

Spend dollars for dad wisely. Check http://www.bbb.org/  for free BBB Reliability Reports. When buying expensive items or gifts, get refund, exchange, warranty and guarantee policies in writing. Ask if there is a return time limit. Get a gift receipt and enclose it with the present.

Delta Greely Blast-off Biathlon a Success

Last Saturday 26 brave individuals from Fairbanks, Ft. Greely, and Delta participated in the Delta Greely Blast-off bike/run biathlon. Despite the cold rain, all participants finished the 8.5 mile bike and 3.1 mile run with flying colors! The top three men were: 1) Robert Marcotte of Fairbanks; 48:00, 2) Jesse Schexnayder of Ft. Greely; 48:15, and 3)Paul Wayfield of Fairbanks; 53:40. The top three women were: 1) Brandy Baker of Delta; 56:12, 2) Brooke Whipple of Delta; 58:00, and 3) Courtney Durham of Delta; 58:54.

The race organizers would like to thank all the volunteers for their help in making this year’s biathlon a success. From keeping refreshments stocked for the racers, to keeping time, to directing traffic, these volunteers helped keep racers safe and the race running smoothly.

The race organizers would also like to thank the following local businesses for their contributions to this year’s race: Buffalo Drive-In, Busy Bee Office Supplies, Durham Realty, DiTamaso, Inc., Ft. Greely FMWR, IGA Food Cache, and Posh Salon.

Other organizations that helped make this year’s race a success include the DA Police, Alaska State Troopers, Delta Junction City Hall, Delta Hockey Association, and Alyeska Pipeline.

We look forward to the return of the triathlon next year when the pool renovations at Ft. Greely are complete.

Thanks again to all who participated and helped make this biathlon such a success!

I stopped at the Birch Lake Campground on the way home from Fairbanks and this Great Gray Owl was perched on a branch and he was kind enough to let me take a few photos. Photo Courtesy Sheryl Mills
