Credit: Make It, Don't Break It

BBB Provides Credit Management Basics

Anchorage, Alaska – May 18, 2010 – Managing credit can seem like a daunting task, but Better Business Bureau has created a new program to help. Statistics show that the need for financial education is prevalent among consumers with varying levels of credit experience.

Debt: U.S. residents carry a whopping $852.6 billion in revolving credit, according to the Federal Reserve’s May 2010 report on consumer credit. Creditcards.com estimates that 54 million households carry credit card debt, which averages $15,788 per household.

Bills: 28 percent of Americans—nearly 64 million—admit to not paying all bills on time, according to National Foundation for Credit Counseling’s 2010 Financial Literacy Survey.

Credit Scores: 65 percent of Americans—roughly 148 million—have not ordered a free credit report in the past year. Nearly one-third (31 percent) do not know their credit score, according to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling’s 2010 Financial Literacy Survey.

Whether consumers are new to credit or balancing overwhelming financial obligations, BBB offers guidance and solutions to make managing credit less complicated.

BBB introduces a new program: Managing Credit—Made Simpler

Consumers and business owners can visit www.bbb.org/credit-management for free information on how to effectively manage credit. Unveiled in April 2010, this program is designed to give customized guidance to credit users, whether they’re: new to credit, balancing credit or overwhelmed by credit obligations. Managing Credit—Made Simpler shows how to:

Build a good credit record. Create a reasonable monthly budget. Whenever possible, make more than the minimum payment and try to pay off the credit balance in full each month.

Improve your credit score. Understand how a score is calculated and how to find mistakes. Federal law allows consumers to request a free copy of their credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus once a year through annualcreditreport.com.

Get help now. Talk to lenders about overwhelming obligations. If needed, meet with a reputable credit counseling agency.

Protect yourself from fraud. Guard credit cards and pin numbers.

Learn about the Credit CARD Act. Stay informed about new credit card regulations and protections.

BBB offers more free resources and guidance at www.bbb.org/credit-management.

Don Haase Files to Represent House District 12

17-year Valdez resident and current Planning and Zoning Commission chair, Don Haase mailed in his filing paperwork Saturday to run as a candidate for House District 12.
Haase, who has been involved in local politics since settling in Valdez in 1993, seized an opportunity when the only Republican candidate from Richardson corridor dropped out last week. “I have a lot to offer,” he says, promising to listen to the district before making decisions. “I have the ability to work across party lines to get things done.” At 40, Haase is also the youngest candidate in the race.

Asked about his opponent, Haase is quick to state “I have no personal gripe with Mayor Cottle. He is a very skilled politician and has demonstrated his commitment to Valdez.” But Haase remembers past decades when the district was represented by the minority in both the House and Senate. He tired of hearing his senator repeat, “I tried to do X, but the majority . . .” “With Republicans certain to maintain control of the House, I think it is important that District 12 send a Republican to Juneau”, says Haase, “and it must be someone who can work well with both parties”.

His focus will be on jobs. “There is not a lot the government can do to create jobs, but government action can do much to hinder job growth through taxation and regulation”, says Haase, promising to maintain a stable tax rate that he feels is less likely to scare off business. On regulation: “some regulation is necessary, but we must be careful not to stifle growth.”

Haase is also strongly committed to the military significance of Alaska, given the state’s strategic location. “I realize that Ft. Greely is outside our district, but I will work with Rep. Salmon to see that Washington knows the vital importance of this base in defending our nation from missile attack.”

If you would like to know more about him, Haase recommends logging on to his website at http://www.haaseforhouse.com/ .

His most important accomplishment? “My kids”, says Haase with a smile. A father of 8, he admits to being somewhat unusual. “But I ask myself which ones would I rather we did not have, and I can’t think of one.”
If it is true that our children are our future, here is one candidate that is heavily invested in a bright future for Alaska.

Armed Forces Day – "United in Strength" – Saturday, May 15

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.
On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department — the Department of Defense.

“… Our Servicemen and women are serving throughout the world as guardians of peace–many of them away from their homes, their friends and their families. They are visible evidence of our determination to meet any threat to the peace with measured strength and high resolve. They are also evidence of a harsh but inescapable truth–that the survival of freedom requires great cost and commitment, and great personal sacrifice.”

President John F. Kennedy, 1963

Peace Officers Memorial Day

Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week is an observance in the United States that pays tribute to the local, state, and peace officers. The Memorial takes place on May 15, and Police Week is the calendar week in which the Memorial falls.

The holiday was created on 1 October 1961 when Congress asked the president to designate 15 May to honor peace officers. John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on October 1, 1962. According to a proclamation by George W. Bush in 2002,

“Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, State, and Federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication. These observances also remind us of the ongoing need to be vigilant against all forms of crime, especially to acts of extreme violence and terrorism.”

Much of the holiday centers on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall in Washington, D.C., whose walls feature the names of the more than 17,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

Alaska, Washington Fishing Industry Warn, Worry About Oil Catastrophe in Northwest Waters

What if a disaster like the tragic oil blowout in the Gulf of Mexico occurred in the Northwest? How could it affect the Northwest fishing industry, the millions of dollars the industry adds to the regional economy, and the thousands of families who rely on a healthy Pacific fishery for their livelihoods?

Join us this Thursday morning at 10:00 am Pacific for a teleconference with fishing industry representatives from Alaska and Washington, an Alaska-based ocean toxicologist, and former fisher calling in from the Gulf Coast. Speakers will discuss the very real potential for a disastrous oil-related catastrophe here — in the Pacific Ocean and coastal waterways off the Oregon, Washingon, British Columbia and Alaska coasts. The long term solution — that will benefit our national security and create jobs — is to shift way from fossil fuel dependency and towards a clean energy economy, starting with passage of a meaningful climate and clean energy bill through Congress.

What: Phone teleconference with Northwest fishing industry representatives, and former Louisiana shrimper calling in from the Gulf Coast.

Call-In Information: Dial: (866) 661-9590 Conference code: 3233007291

When: 10:00 am to 10:45 am, Pacific time

Who: Pete Knutson: has been a commercial fisherman in North Pacific for 38 years, fishing for salmon and halibut. Knutson is owner of Loki Fish Co, a family fishing business that supplies Seattle area farmers markets and coops. He has represented fishermen In Alaska and Puget Sound over the past 30 years. Ms. Curole is currently an executive board member Commercial Fishermen of America, she has also acted as legislative liaison and representative at large for the Louisiana Shrimp Association.

Riki Ott, PhD is a marine toxicologist and commercial fisherma’m who was one of the first people on the scene during the Exxon Valdez oil spill, when millions of gallons of crude oil were discharged in the single most devastating environmental catastrophe in U.S. history. For 21 years, she has been the voice and face of efforts for justice http://www.rikiott.com/. Her latest book on the spill is NOT ONE DROP (Chelsea Green, 2008) on community level social impacts of disaster trauma. Her first book on spill impact to human health and the environment is SOUND TRUTH AND CORPORATE MYTHS. She is also the star of the award-winning film BLACK WAVE: The Legacy of the Exxon Valdez. Who Would Target a Grandparent?

Older Americans Month: BBB Warns of Schemes Targeting Seniors

Anchorage, Alaska – May 11, 2010 – May is Older Americans Month and Better Business Bureau warns about scams targeting this demographic.

Why do scam artists target seniors? Because seniors:

  • Are more likely to be available at home to answer the door or phone.
  • Often are more trusting and less likely to suspect a con artist, especially when given a friendly pitch.
  • Are less likely to do home, auto or other types of repairs themselves.
  • Tend to own a home and carry high equity, making them predatory lending targets.
  • Are more likely to live on a fixed income, making promises of high returns or big savings more appealing.
  •  May be embarrassed or fear losing control of their affairs if they report fraud.

“Con artists are masters at targeting emotions to gain sympathy or produce fear,” said Robert W.G. Andrew, CEO of BBB serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington. “This tactic can quickly walk anyone, especially some seniors, into a trap.”

Grandparent Scheme: Claiming to be a grandchild or other loved one, the scam artist pleas for help with getting out of a foreign country, towing a stranded vehicle or getting bail for a crime they didn’t commit. Ask the caller and family questions to avoid forwarding funds to a stranger.

Lotteries and Sweepstakes: Win notices promise prizes or big bucks and ask for personal information or funds to cover taxes or fees. “Winnings” are fake or fraudulent. In legitimate cases fees are taken out before winnings are sent and taxes are handled with annual tax returns. Remember, it is illegal to participate in foreign lotteries via phone or mail.

Government Impersonators. Posing as Social Security, Medicare or other government employees, crooks attempt to verify Social Security or bank account numbers. Be skeptical; ask for full contact information, then contact the real agency through a directory to verify legitimacy. Don’t share medical insurance information with anyone except your medical providers.

Telemarketing: Avoid possible scams and unwanted sales pitches by registering home and cell phone numbers with the National Do-Not-Call Registry. This makes it illegal for telemarketers (excluding charity and political marketers) to call. Visit http://www.donotcall.gov/  or call 1-888-382-1222.

Charity Scams: Often claiming affiliation with police, firefighters or veterans, scammers solicit money for “charity,” but pocket money instead. Visit http://www.bbb.org/  to get BBB Charity Reviews and more charity tips. In Alaska, confirm soliciting charities are properly registered with the Alaska Department of Law.

Savings and Investment Schemes: Beware of offers claiming high returns on investments or astronomical savings on products, programs or services. Deals don’t always pan out, and may lead to high monthly fees.

Repair Scams: Be cautious of door-to-door “handymen” offering home or yard fixes. Some use leftover materials and promise huge discounts. Offers are tempting but some result in unfinished projects, poor workmanship or final invoices being much higher than originally estimated.

BBB Tips. Get written contracts and verify licensing. Don’t deal with businesses that won’t provide detailed contact information. Visit http://www.bbb.org/  to check BBB Reliability Reports and get scam prevention tips.

Alaska Gas Prices Weekly Update

Alaska, AK, May 10- Average retail gasoline prices in Alaska have fallen 3.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.38/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.93/g, according to gasoline price website AlaskaGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Alaska during the past week, prices yesterday were 85.6 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 5.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has increased 6.8 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 72.1 cents per gallon higher than this day a year ago.

“Last week we saw a correction in oil and wholesale gasoline prices,” said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst. “With wholesale gasoline prices down as much as 30 cents per gallon since last Monday, I expect retail gasoline prices to fall as gasoline stations continue to sell through their more expensive inventory and buy cheaper supply, passing on lower prices to motorists.” DeHaan says that the correction in oil prices wasn’t much of a surprise, noting that fundamentals continue to show growing supply. “If the sentiment that ruled last week continues to weigh on traders, we could see the average price for gasoline drop across much of the country, just in time for Memorial Day weekend,” he adds.
