Eagle Trail Fire Update

Residents of the Village of Tanacross and the Eagle subdivision were allowed to return home at 8pm last night. Eight hotshot crews from the lower 48 and numerous other resources arrived yesterday. Additional aircraft resources have been requested to meet incident objectives. Work continued to secure structures in the Crystal Springs area and crews started to mop-up and secure the line on the southeast corner. The fire is 15% contained at this time.
The Eagle Trail Fire continues to be the priority fire in the state. Fire crews are focused on keeping the Alaska Highway open between Milepost 1324-1332 and continue structure protection in the Eagle subdivision, Village of Tanacross, Crystal Springs and Mansfield Village.

Currently Alaska Fire Weather indices are at extreme. The winter was very dry, with little or no moisture in the interior of Alaska from November until now. Wet meadows and willow patches that normally wouldn’t support fire spread are ineffective as natural barriers, control lines or safety zones.

Weather: Red flag warnings are in effect through the evening for low humidities. Hot and dry weather is expected to continue through mid week with thunderstorms forecasted till Tuesday. Winds are predicted to be light except when thunderstorms cells are overhead which can cause erratic and gusty winds.
Road Conditions: Firefighters and firefighting equipment are located on the Alaska Highway from Milepost 1321 near the Eagle subdivision to milepost 1330 near Moon Lake. Due to the active wildland fire activity on the Alaska Highway there can be temporary traffic delays. Traffic near the affected area is being escorted by fire personnel. Drivers are urged to use caution as dust and smoke is limiting visibility. Drive slowly with headlights on and do not stop in areas where the fire is encroaching on the road.

There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the Tanacross airport. It is a 5 mile radius from the airport up to 5000 feet. Contact frequency is 133.45. Pilots are advised to check NOTAMS before flying into or around the Tok area.

The Incident Command Post (ICP) is located at the school in Tok, Alaska. Information updates are posted on local bulletin boards in town. Local residents are welcome to call or visit us at the ICP. For a statewide perspective on the current fire situation you can view the AICC website at http://fire.ak.blm.gov/content/news/highlights/current.pdf

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the Civil War), it was expanded after World War I.

Following the end of the Civil War, many communities set aside a day to mark the end of the war or as a memorial to those who had died. Some of the places creating an early memorial day include Sharpsburg, Maryland, located near Antietam Battlefield; Charleston, South Carolina; Boalsburg, Pennsylvania; Petersburg, Virginia; Carbondale, Illinois; Columbus, Mississippi; many communities in Vermont; and some two dozen other cities and towns. These observances coalesced around Decoration Day, honoring the Union dead, and the several Confederate Memorial Days.

Phony Publishers Clearing House Calls and Letters

Avoid Getting Scammed

Anchorage, Alaska – May 28, 2010 – Fake sweepstakes checks in the mail are common, but now Better Business Bureau warns of phony calls from Publishers Clearing House (PCH) impersonators promising a $2.5 million prize.

This type of scam isn’t new. It has been circulating for years, according to Publishers Clearing House. Real sweepstakes facts can be found on the official website, pch.com.

Fake lottery checks was one of BBB’s top 10 most reported rip-offs of 2009. Last year, your BBB issued the following alerts: Check Disguised as Free Money, Has Fraudulent Funds and Phony Letter  From Publishers Clearing House Lands in Mailboxes Across the Country.
BBB serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington offers the following information to help prevent Publishers Clearing House prize scams:

Prize winners will not be notified by phone or regular mail. Consumers who win over $10,000 will be awarded in person by the PCH Prize Patrol, with no advance notification. Those who win less than $10,000 will receive an affidavit via certified mail. Additionally, PCH does send out post cards and mailings promoting their services and surveys.

At the real Publishers Clearing House, the winning is always free. Do not send or wire any money in order to collect the prize. Don’t trust anyone requesting payment for “taxes,” “custom fees,” “border security” or other purported reasons.

If suspicious of a fraudulent call, letter, e-mail or check from someone claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House, contact the actual PCH at 1-800-645-9242 then press 5.

Report lottery and sweepstakes fraudsters to: The Federal Trade Commission, 1-877-382-4357; the Alaska Attorney General, www.law.state.ak.us/consumer ; and if received by mail, the United States Postal Inspection Service, 1-877-876-2455. Visit http://www.bbb.org/  for more fraud prevention tips.

Delta Participates in Nat'l Day of Prayer

“There was an alarming amount of controversy recently about the National Day of Prayer. It is shocking to experience, in our own country, such open opposition to Christian prayer for the nation. Despite that, millions of people across America did pray on May 6. And on May 7, on May 8, and every day since. The truth is, no judge and no critics will ever stop believers from praying.” (Franklin Graham)

In Delta, over 70 people gathered at City Hall to pray for America, our State and our local government. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, Victoria Joslin sang the Star-Spangled Banner. It was a wonderfully diverse gathering, with the crowd made up of men, women and children, black, white, Filippino, Ukrainian, Russian, and Alaska Native, and pastors from 10 different local churches ~ ALL praying together in unity! The depth of prayers from laypeople and pastors alike was amazing, as we joined our faith in prayer for our Government, Families, Businesses, Education, Churches, Media, and Military. The presence of God was practically tangible in the room.

Evelyn Glass was asked to end the gathering with the singing of America, the Beautiful. Thanks to all who formally participated, and all who came to lift up our nation to God in prayer. And thanks be to God, who hears and answers our prayers. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Alaska Holiday Weekend Gas Price Update & Comparison

Alaska, AK, May 27- GasBuddy today projected that average gasoline prices in the Continental United States over the Memorial Day weekend will average 30-cents per gallon higher than last year, but will be the second cheapest on record since 2006. The average price across the United States will be $2.75 per gallon, with the lowest prices in South Carolina, New Jersey, and Oklahoma, where prices will drop as low as $2.35 per gallon. Some of the highest prices in the United States will be in the West (including Alaska and Hawaii), where prices will remain over $3 per gallon.

This year, prices in the United States will have fallen an average of 15-cents during May, marking the first year since 2006 that prices fell during this time frame. Motorists can thank abundant supply of oil and gasoline products as well as plenty of spare capacity for the recent downturn. While most will see lower prices, some areas of the West are seeing prices that have barely dropped or even increased during the month.

GasBuddy forecasts much of the U.S. will see falling prices after the holiday, continuing a downward trend. In Alaska, prices have increased 5.2 cents per gallon from $3.43/g earlier this month to $3.48/g yesterday. Prices yesterday were 79.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

“Falling gasoline prices couldn’t have come at a better time for motorists as they prepare to embark on their weekend plans,” says Patrick DeHaan, Senior Petroleum Analyst of GasBuddy.com. DeHaan says prices are poised to fall even after Memorial Day, the start to the summer driving season, is over. “Oil prices have lost over 15% of their value in just a few weeks so we’ll continue to see retail prices fall,” he adds.

Historical Memorial Day pricing and trends leading to the holiday:

Wednesday before Memorial Day, 2010: $3.48/g, with prices falling 7.4 cents per gallon between May 1 and yesterday.

Memorial Day, 2009: $2.66/g, with prices rising 17.0 cents per gallon between May 1 and Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day, 2008: $4.07/g, with prices rising 22.4 cents per gallon between May 1 and Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day, 2007: $3.04/g, with prices rising 12.8 cents per gallon between May 1 and Memorial Day weekend.

Motorists can visit AlaskaGasPrices.com and plan their holiday weekend trips using the GasBuddy Trip Cost Calculator, a tool that uses GasBuddy’s powerful price search engine to cost efficiently route each trip based on users entering information such as their destination and vehicle type.

GasBuddy.com operates over 200 live gasoline price-tracking websites, including AlaskaGasPrices.com. GasBuddy.com was named one of Time magazine’s 50 best websites and to PC World’s 100 most useful websites of 2008.

Alaska Right to Life endorses Joe Miller in U.S. Senate Race

Anchorage, Alaska–Alaska’s largest pro-life organization has cast its support behind Joe Miller in the upcoming race for U.S. Senate. The Alaska Right to Life Political Action Committee announced its decision to back Miller after a meeting of board members. Alaska Right to Life is of course quite familiar with Sen. Murkowski’s record. This familiarity, along with a thorough evaluation of Miller’s position on the issues has led to AKRTL’s earliest endorsement of any statewide race.
“In previous elections we have waited until much further in the election cycle to make such an announcement, but Sen. Murkowski’s record on the life issue is so far removed even from the Republican mainstream that when contrasted with a pro-life candidate of Miller’s credentials, the decision of which candidate to support in the Republican Primary was clear,” said AKRTL PAC Chairman, Christopher Kurka.

Along with being one of three current “Stars” of the pro-abortion organization “The Wish List”, Sen. Murkowski also abandoned her Republican colleagues and sided with President Obama and Senator Barbara Boxer to use taxpayer dollars to fund non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who promote unqualified abortions. On three separate occasions she joined Senate Democrats in voting to strike down the policy, first passed by President Reagan, which only permitted such public funding for abortions when they involved rape, incest, or the life of the mother. By striking down even these basic limitations, Sen. Murkowski has allied herself with the most extreme elements of the pro-abortion lobby to remove funds from pro-family NGOs and instead force taxpayers to fund organizations and practices that they find morally reprehensible.

Alaska Right to Life believes that such practices not only violate the dignity of the unborn human person, but also the right of American men and women, as moral agents, to object when their taxes are to be used to fund that which they believe is morally abhorrent. Unlike Sen. Murkowski, Joe Miller has consistently stood on the side of protecting innocent human life at all stages of development, from conception until natural death.

“It is so encouraging to have such a solid pro-life candidate running for office. We are saddened and disappointed with Sen. Murkowski’s anti-life voting record; we call on all pro-life Alaskans to support Joe Miller”, said Dr. Christie Eberhardt President of Alaska Right to Life.

Alaska Right to Life Board member Sen. Fred Dyson said, “I am supporting Joe Miller because he is a man of principle, integrity and courage; all characteristics in short supply in the contemporary American scene. We are fortunate to have a man of this caliber willing to serve.”

“The mission of Alaska Right to Life is to protect and defend innocent human life…from the moment of conception until natural end of life”.

For assistance or for more information, please contact Christopher Kurka, Chairman of Alaska Right to Life Political Action Committee at cdk@mtaonline.net  or (907) 854-8482.

$34,800 in Scholarships Awarded to DHS Graduates

Community of Delta Junction awards $ 34, 800 in scholarships to Delta High School Graduates

Sixteen Seniors took the time to fill out multiple scholarship applications for an opportunity to participate in the traditional local community scholarship interview night which took place on May 11th. This detailed process begins in April with essay writing, gathering letters of recommendations from teachers or community members, and trying to remember what all each student has done in the last four years including community volunteer activities, participation in clubs or sports, and honors and awards each one has received. Oh and did I mention, writing multiple essays addressing questions from each organization. There was a possibility for each student to be eligible for 17 different scholarship organizations. The scholarship recipients were announced at graduation on May 21st. Here is a recap:

Delta High School Boosters supports activities and its participants within the high school. This organization required an additional essay addressing the importance of involvement in school activities. The responses as well as recommendations were the most heavily weighed. The Booster club awarded Jonathan Kimble, Erica Wells, and Ruby Bynum scholarships in the amount of $500. The Booster club also awarded a $1,000 Kiwanis Scholarship to Mark Jackson.

The Buffalo Chapter of the Alaska State Employees Association awarded their recipients $500 because of their outstanding performance and exceptional achievements. The two scholarships went to Erica Wells and Mallory Wrigley.

The Delta Chapter of the Alaska Farm Bureau awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Donald Hannan. The Farm Bureau awards scholarship money to students who are pursuing agricultural related studies after high school. This is a very detailed scholarship and requires students to answer questions and write an essay related to the importance of agriculture now and in the future.

The Salcha-Delta Soil and Water Conservation District scholarship begins with a participation in an essay contest and then requires students to complete additional paperwork to become eligible for the full award. This year Mallory Wrigley and Ruby Bynum were each awarded $2, 500.

The Delta Greely Parent-Teacher-Student-Scholarship supports children and youth in the schools and in the community. They also assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children. The PTSA encourages parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation. This organization has been very involved in the high school and has used money from fundraisers and school vending machine sales to support scholarships for graduating seniors. This year the Delta Greely PTSA awarded Mark Jackson $1,000 and Mallory Wrigley $500. If you would like to be involved in this organization, look for advertisements in the fall when students are back to school.

Kaya Associates, Ft. Greely is the sponsor of two scholarships exclusively for Delta High School National Honor Society members. This year two scholarships in the amount of $1250.00 were awarded to Jonathan Kimble and Mark Jackson who best represented the qualities of an NHS member: scholarship, leadership, service and character.

The Delta Clearwater Moose Lodge #911 awarded Angelica Heintz a scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Two $500 scholarships went to Emily Kimball and Darrin Robertson. The Moose Lodge requires its eligible applicants to have a relative who is a member. Darrin Robertson also received the R. Robert Dale scholarship in the amount of $1,000. He was selected out of all Lodge’s within the Association (Alaska & Hawaii).

The Pioneers of Alaska Men’s Igloo #35 and Women’s Igloo #19 required the scholarship recipient to be related to a member of either Igloo and has maintained a GPA of 3.0. Danielle Bunselmeier received this scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

Delta Chamber of Commerce was looking for applicants who were interested in pursuing a business related field and planned on returning to Delta. Criteria was also based on community service activities. The Loretta Schooley Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Charlie Herman in the amount of $1,000. The Mabel Olmstead Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Mallory Wrigley in the amount of $1,000.

The Delta Clearwater Senior Citizens awarded two scholarships in the amount of $750. The recipients were Mallory Wrigley and Ruby Bynum.

Delta Concrete awarded Mark Jackson and Anna Byam scholarships in the amount of $1,000.

The Delta Greely Education Association awarded Anna Byam a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

The Delta Greely Educational Support Personnel Association awarded Mallory Wrigley this year’s scholarship in the amount of $500.

Erica Wells and Hilary Fleming each received $1,000 from the Delta Lions Club.

Delta’s IGA Food Cache awarded Donald Hannan, Amanda Fisher, and Charlie Herman scholarships in the amount of $500. The Gary Frederick Memorial Scholarship awarded by the IGA was given to Erica Wells in the amount of $2,000.

Kathy Heral was a beloved local community member who had a passion for music. Upon her passing from cancer, a memorial fund was created in 1986 to help her passion live on. This year the memorial scholarship was awarded to Jung Tak in the amount of $1,000.

The Delta Skating Association awarded the Linda Sorensen Memorial Scholarship to Mark Jackson in the amount of $500.

Angie Heintz received the Women of the Moose scholarship in the amount of $500.

The Delta Sportsman’s Assocation awarded three scholarships in the amount of $500 to Ryan Dunham-Bender, Donald Hannan, and Amanda Fisher.

Josh Bialik received the Denali Lutheran Preschool scholarship in the amount of $300.

Best of luck to these students and the rest of the Class of 2010 as they begin to pursue their future plans!

Fairbanks First “Quick Draw”, a new timed-art event, will be featured during the annual Design Alaska Wild Arts Walk on Sunday, June 6. The fun begins at 1:30 pm as artists race against the clock to start and finish original paintings in one hour! Bidding on the finished paintings begins at 2:45 as guest auctioneer UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers offers the framed art in an outcry auction. Accepting the “Quick Draw” challenge are well-known Alaska artists Jeanne Armstrong, Randall Compton, Daniel Kennedy, Tammy Phillips, Todd Sherman and Vladimir Zhikhartsev. Each of the artists has a different painting style and will work in a variety of mediums and themes. The audience can mingle and watch each artist progress from a blank canvas to a completed painting in an hour.

Photo of the day – May 21

This sunset was taken at the overlook at Postmark Drive in Anchorage this March. What I like about sunsets is that if you hang out for the duration of the sunset, you can get some totally different looking shots at the same place. Photo courtesy Barb Tharp

Photo of the day – May 20

On Tuesday evening about 5:30, I was outside when my wife exclaimed excitedly that there was a tornado out on the Delta River, while I was mentally checking it was not April 1, I looked out and sure enough a funnel cloud was emanating near Delta River. Apparently, there was a controlled burn on Donnelly Training Area and the smoke from the fire was caught up. I have little knowledge how this can happen but the visual is quite stunning.
