Today is Arbor Day

Arbor Day originates back to the 1800s when pioneers first made their way into the Nebraska Territory. One pioneer in particular, J. Sterling Morton was a nature lover and was disappointed in the lack of trees in Nebraska. He and his wife were determined to change this – they planted numerous trees and flowers on their property. Morton began to spread his message when he became the editor of the first newspaper in Nebraska. Eventually, Morton became the secretary of the Nebraska Territory, and he spread his message about trees even further.

The public caught on, and Morton proposed a tree-planting holiday in 1872 to be held in April. Due to the overwhelming response from the public, Arbor Day became a state holiday in 1874. On Arbor Day, Nebraskan students would celebrate by going outside and planting trees, usually to be followed by a parade. By 1882, schools across the nation followed suit, and Arbor Day became a nationally-recognized holiday.

It is estimated that over 1,000,000 trees were planted on the first Arbor Day in Nebraska.

Trees are extremely important to both the environment and the population. Trees provide shade and shelter, are home to thousands of different animals and insects, and consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen to the environment.

Trees were essential for the early pioneers because they would serve as windbreaks to prevent soil from flying away, their roots would prevent erosion, and their wood was used for building purposes and fuel.

Arbor Day is celebrated in most states on the last Friday in April, but some states celebrate it earlier or later in the year according to the most appropriate time of the season to plant trees. Extreme northern states usually celebrate Arbor Day in May, while extreme southern states usually celebrate it in January or February.

Tourists Steered in Negative Direction by RV Business

B&B RV Rental in Anchorage Gets BBB’s Lowest Rating
Anchorage, Alaska – April 29, 2010 – Anchorage-based B&B RV Rental has caused problems for some Alaska tourists, Better Business Bureau warns.

Since July 2008, BBB serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington has received 305 inquiries and 12 complaints regarding B&B RV Rental. The company has failed to resolve or respond to nine of the complaints leaving the business with an “F” rating from BBB. The company’s business license expired Dec. 31, 2009; however, their website, bnbrv.com, is currently advertising a “sale” for summer 2010.

Complaints show a pattern of consumers who allegedly received RVs that did not work properly or did not resemble the advertised motor homes. Some complaints allege that refunds were delayed or not delivered. And some consumers discovered their reserved motor homes were not available upon pickup.

B&B RV Rental’s expired business license reports Peter Harkovitch as the owner and provides a residential address of 2821 Devin Cir. The business’ website provides 5737 Old Seward Highway as the place of business.

Tourism related businesses were among BBB’s Top 2009 Inquiries and Complaints for Alaska. When booking an Alaskan adventure or other vacation, BBB suggests:
 -  Researching businesses. Before making a purchase, look up the company online and make sure it is properly licensed. Always check http://www.bbb.org/  for free BBB Reliability Reports and tips.
-  Getting details in writing and reading fine print. Always ask for confirmation of travel arrangements in writing and get copies of cancellation and refund policies. Read contracts before signing and never sign if information is not filled in the blanks.
- Verifying online security. Before making a purchase or entering personal information online, make sure the Web address has an “s” in “https” and look for a lock box next to the Web address bar or in the bottom right of the window to ensure the site is secure. Be careful when signing up for free offers and make sure not to click links or check boxes for costly, unwanted offers. Carefully read fine print and disclaimers before pressing ‘submit.’
- Paying by credit card, ideally within 60 days of a trip. Credit card companies may allow consumers to dispute charges within 60 days of purchase.
- Inspecting rentals. Before leaving, visually inspect the interior and exterior of the vehicle for dings, dents and scratches. Have damage recorded in writing with the rental company before leaving the lot. Get all verbal agreements for base rental cost, daily fees, insurance, the vehicle inspection summary or other rental particulars on paper.

BBB offers dispute resolution services and consumers can file a complaint at http://www.bbb.org/

Convoy Drivers Follow Safety Procedures

Submitted by Connie Storch

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – All the signs are here – the bright sun, melting snow and ice, neighborhood cookouts and military convoys on the roads heading to southern training areas. It’s officially springtime in Alaska.

Although training is a year-round activity for soldiers, vehicles and convoys are more visible on Alaskan roads during warm-weather months.

“You don’t see a lot of vehicles on the roads in the winter just because we can’t run our vehicles on the roads then,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 John Mulrooney, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade mobility officer. “It’s just not safe to do so and we will mitigate safety at all costs. We schedule our ranges so we are not running them in the wintertime.”

Increased military vehicles on Alaska’s roadways are just another part of this time of year at Fort Wainwright, but soldiers and civilian employees who work to keep convoys safe said there are safety precautions that every driver should keep in mind when encountering them on the road.

“When passing a convoy, be sure that you are in the legal passing lane to pass and ensure that you have enough room to get in between the vehicles,” said Larry Wolterman, Directorate of Logistics Deployment Support Branch supervisor. “They’re spaced far enough so you can pass one and maybe two at a time.”

Some of the biggest safety obstacles convoys encounter are wildlife, narrow roadways and other drivers passing unsafely, said Sgt. 1st Class April Letourneau, mobility noncommissioned officer, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. Passing a convoy, a line of more than five vehicles, on the roads is often necessary since their maximum speed is 45 mph, she said.

“People need to realize that on the highways we go 45 mph because we have large, armored vehicles and the armored plating is very heavy so if we go slower it makes it easier for us to stop in a hurry.

We are basically the same weight as a tractor trailer, just more compact,” she explained.

The last vehicle in a convoy will have signage indicating that a convoy is ahead and all oversized vehicles, like the Stryker will have signs indicating that they are oversized. In addition to not exceeding 45 mph, or the posted speed limit, whichever is less, vehicles within the convoy will remain 50 meters apart, Letourneau said.

From slower speed limits to required signage, convoy drivers and mobility officers work diligently to adhere to all safety guidelines.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that (convoys) follow the Alaska Department of Transportation regulations to be sure that they’re legal and to be sure that the vehicles are safe and are able to go on Alaska roads,” Wolterman said.

He and his staff process approximately five to 10 convoys per week this time of year and work closely with unit commanders to ensure safety remains the number one priority. “The convoy commanders brief their convoy drivers very well. They know what to do in case of accidents or in case of breakdowns,” he said.

Drivers complete 40 hours of classroom training and 40 hours of driver training to ensure they have the skills and knowledge to maneuver a military vehicle. Additionally, more experienced, trained drivers ride with new drivers, Letourneau said.

“Our young leaders are the ones making it all happen. These are the guys who are making sure that it’s not just the oil, not just the tires, not just the windshields, but that the drivers are trained; they’ve gone through all the right gates to allow them to operate the vehicle,” Mulrooney said. “So that’s where the real rubber meets the road, so to speak, when putting convoys together.”

When driving on Fort Wainwright, Letourneau said convoys do not use roads through housing areas or school zones and only use main thorough fares, company and motor pool areas.

“Our drivers are trained and we are professionals. What we are doing here prepares us for future deployments,” she said. “We appreciate the public’s support.”

Post Participates in Exercise

Fort Wainright – A trio of exercises this month will test the reaction and abilities of military and civilian agencies around the state.
Exercise Arctic Edge 10 will train NORAD-NORTHCOM, Joint Task Force-Alaska and Alaska NORAD Region in homeland security and homeland defense processes, with an emphasis on Department of Defense support to civil authority in Alaska. Other exercises include Vigilant Guard, sponsored by the National Guard Bureau, and Alaska Shield 10, involving the State of Alaska departments of Health and Social Services, Public Safety, Homeland Security and Emergency Management and Transportation. The three exercises will run concurrently and share the same scenario, an earthquake and ensuing tsunami near Anchorage.

The exercises provide Fort Wainwright an opportunity to test its agencies. Playing off the earthquake scenario and its effects on Fairbanks and Fort Wainwright, we will evacuate a child-care center and test our hazardous-spill response. We will also test our force protection measures by increasing our security posture to ensure it can be done swiftly and smoothly. Bassett Army Community Hospital will assess their triage and decontamination processes working in conjunction with Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

Residents and visitors may notice unusual activity and slight traffic delays at the gates through May 1 as a result of the exercise.

Bring Your Kid to Work Day

The History of Bring Your Kid to Work Day

Bring Your Kid to Work Day started in 2003 and has involved millions of individuals and families. Children get an understanding of what ‘mommy and daddy’ do everyday to provide a home for them and children get the experience of seeing first hand what their parents do everyday. They also have the opportunity to discover what they might like to do when they enter the workforce.

Bring Your Kid to Work Day is once a year, but parents and teachers should encourage conversation and experiences with children throughout the year.

Bring Your Kid to Work Day Activity Ideas.

  • Have the kids interview their parent about what they like about their job. Have each kid share what they learned to the group.
  • draw a floor plan of their parent’s office space or floor they work on and then have them re-design the space to better accomodate people’s needs.
  • create their own company with a company name, tagline, business cards, product/service price sheet, advertisements etc. and then each child shares with the group. Have them create a market research survey that will help them better plan their ‘make believe’ company’s product / service.
  • write about their skills and talents and then have them communicate this at a ‘networking party’ with the other kids and parents. Have them follow up the networking party by sending thank you e-cards to everyone they met.

Have the parents describe each task they are doing and have the child participate in the task

  • give money to the child and let them pay for lunch or snacks
  • talk about major events in their life that lead them to their career decision

Earth Day

In the late 1960s and 1970s, there was a growing concern about pollution and the environment. Earth Day first began in 1970 as a day to bring awareness to ecology and to the protection of the environment around the world. On April 22, over one hundred countries will celebrate Earth Day and many people participate in helping to save our world not just on Earth Day but every day of the year.

Since June 2001, the United States has partnered with 20 nations and the European Union on resolving environmental issues. On Earth Day 2007, US Federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture, and the State Department, participated in park cleanups, tree plantings, and environmental education events.

The United Nations celebrates Earth Day on the vernal equinox but many countries celebrate on April 22.

How can you make a difference?

Create space for a small garden or put plants on your deck or patio. Put potato and carrot peels, eggshells, and ground coffee into a compost heap.

When you are not using something, turn it off. Turn off lights, computers, televisions, or anything that uses energy. Many items, even DVD players, use energy when turned off, so unplugging those items is the only way to truly conserve.

Shut off the water when you brush your teeth.

Walk, use a bike, or use public transportation instead of using a car

Put water saving faucets in showers and sinks. They release a smaller amount of water and you probably won’t notice the difference.

Hang clothes on a line outside instead of using a clothes dryer

Luntz Family Sends Thank You

To all the folks this past weekend that helped us help MJ. Your kindness, generosity and support demonstrate why we love this community and this State.

Your donations and support will allow us not only to attend the Annual International Rett Syndrome Conference in Colorado, but also insure MJ goes to a specialty Rett Clinic in the Northwest. Additionally we are able to pay some medical bills off, and do some safety modifications around our home.

There have been so many things that have happened these past few weeks that have touched and changed our lives. We truly feel that MJ’s family now consists of all of you.

We ask for your continued support of MJ by recognizing her every now and then and saying hello, she will appreciate it, as she knows many of you personally and enjoys your company.

Upon our return from Colorado our advocacy for Alaska’s Rett Girls will go into full swing. Your donations and support enabled this as well, and never will be forgotten.

Thank you so very much.
May you all be blessed in your own way.
David, Melissa and Maryjane Luntz

Administrative Professional's Day

Administrative Professionals Day (formerly known as Secretary’s Day) is an unofficial secular holiday observed in the United States on the Wednesday of the last full week of April to recognize the work of secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals.

National Secretaries Week was created in 1952 through the efforts of Harry F. Klemfuss, a New York publicist. Working in conjunction with the National Secretaries Association, later known as the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), Klemfuss wanted to encourage more people to consider careers in the secretarial/administrative support field.

The official period of celebration was first proclaimed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer as “National Secretaries Week,” which was held June 1–7 in 1952, with Wednesday, June 4, 1952 designated National Secretaries Day. The first Secretaries’ Day was sponsored by the National Secretaries Association with the support corporate groups.

In 1955, the observance date of National Secretaries Week was moved to the last full week of April. The name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981, and became Administrative Professionals Week in 2000 to encompass the expanding responsibilities and wide-ranging job titles of administrative support staff.

Cleaning up after thousands at Arctic Man is no easy task

FAIRBANKS — Cleanup on Mile 197.

When 10,000-plus people show up for a party, keeping things safe and tidy takes more than just a few trash cans and patrol cars.
At the Arctic Man Ski and Sno-Go Classic, which took place April 7-11, Alaska State Troopers had two helicopters, 25 officers, five additional staff members and a new command center on loan from the Department of Homeland Security.

Horizon Services needed six workers and six trucks daily to ship portable toilet waste to Delta Junction. It also kept two pump trucks on site and offered to dispose of wastewater from trailers and campers.

For race day, Horizon dragged four portable toilets to the finish line via two snowmachines. The company has provided sanitary services to the event since Arctic Man began 25 years ago, said company president Wally Olsen.

As for more standard garbage, such as cans and bags, Alaska Waste provided four 40-cubic-yard containers for trash. The company hauled 16 tons of trash out of the area after April 11.

The trooper control center, called a mobile emergency operation center, provided troopers with Internet service and a link to databases such as statewide criminal records. It can receive any kind of radio frequency available.

Lt. Lonny Piscoya said he was pleased with the command center because it offers troopers connections in a communications dead zone.

“We did everything over the radio (in past years), which is difficult and a little tedious,” said Piscoya from the vehicles dispatch room Friday. “This is a phenomenal piece of equipment.”

According to spokeswoman Megan Peters, dispatch reports show troopers and Highway Patrol officers opened 54 cases connected with Arctic Man.

An opened case does not necessarily mean an arrest was made or ticket issued.

Five cases were opened for driving under the influence, three for minors consuming alcohol and one for misconduct involving a controlled substance. Four arrests were made on warrants.

From Wednesday to Friday, troopers only arrested about seven people, Piscoya said on Friday. The most severe offenses to that point were DUI and outstanding warrants.

Friday and Saturday nights tend to be the busiest nights for law enforcement at Arctic Man, Piscoya said.

Before Friday night, one person needed emergency medical assistance. A man injured his shoulder in the mountains and was unable to drive back. He was evacuated by helicopter.
