Alaska, AK, March 15- Average retail gasoline prices in Alaska have risen 8.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.40/g today. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.78/g, according to gasoline price website AlaskaGasPrices.com.
Including the change in gas prices in Alaska during the past week, prices today are 95.7 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 2.0 cents per gallon flat than a month ago. The national average has increased 16.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 88.4 cents per gallon higher than this day a year ago.
“We’re starting off March like a lion with little hope of it going out like a lamb”, said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst. “While conventional wisdom tells us demand will increase as we move towards warmer weather, it appears that gasoline price increases have easily outpaced any potential increases in demand thus far. On that note, I expect most of the country to flirt with prices near or over $3/gallon come Memorial Day, with the exception of California, where prices will average near $3.35/gallon”, he adds. DeHaan goes on to say that the only bright spot for motorists this year is that plenty of spare refining capacity and lower gasoline demand than years prior will keep gasoline prices from rising to record highs.

Roxie Rodgers Dinstel, Home Economist with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Tanana District Cooperative Extension Service will be conducting a class on “Physical Activity and Nutrition For Alaska’s
Kids” on Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Delta Career Advancement Center.
Participants will learn about childhood overweight issues, how to use policy and environmental strategies in the childcare setting to increase physical activity and healthy food choices, and strategies to help parents increase activity and improve food choices at home.
Information presented will also prepare childcare centers to apply the principles of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, MyPyramid, and the CACFP into the nutrition education curriculum, classroom
environment, and their personal behavior.
All child care center staff, administrators, food service staff, and parents will benefit from this training. Participants will receive a copy of the Physical Activity and Nutrition training manual published by the Division of Public Health.

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – The U.S. Army Dental Command Alaska will host the 2010 Women’s History Month observance Mar. 23 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Fort Wainwright’s Physical Fitness Center.
The event intends to educate the audience on this year’s theme of “writing women back into history” with a guest speaker and live entertainment.
Lt. Col. Cynthia Aita-Holmes, Chief of Prosthodontics at Fort Wainwright, is scheduled to appear as the guest speaker. As a young woman, Holmes qualified in swimming for the Canadian Olympic trials. She later served 12 years in the Canadian Army as a dentist and she joined the U.S. Army as a dental officer in 2005.
The event is free and open to the public. Civilians wishing to attend must stop at the visitors’ center at the main gate with driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance.
Long time Delta resident Nikolaj (Nick) Marchuk passed away Thursday March 11, 2010 at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Memorial Services will take place at 2:00pm on Sunday March 14, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Delta Junction.

FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – Contractors have changed the time schedule for work on the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Meridian and Montgomery roads.
Work is now scheduled to start Thursday, March 11, and last through March 24.
The intersection will be open on the weekends during this time.
Drivers on post will encounter a traffic diversion at the intersection while contractors work on the project.
Meridian Road will be closed from the police station to Neely Road. Montgomery Road will be closed on both ends of the intersection with Meridian. Detour signs will be posted.
Post officials ask that all drivers use caution and be prepared for delays as the contractors work to complete the project.

In the early months of 2010, Better Business Bureau received 219 consumer inquiries on Ultimate RV Camping—a documented increase compared to 35 inquiries in the last half of 2009. Due to its failure to respond to complaints, this business has an “F” rating with your BBB.
Ultimate RV Camping also goes by Ultimate RV Tool, Internet Camping, Internet Camping Family and JAD Holdings. It advertises the ‘Ultimate RV Travel Tool’ as “the quickest, easiest way to search, browse, and reserve North America’s most popular RV parks … INSTANTLY!” Sites like ultimatervcamping.com, internetcamping.com, and internetcamping.net entice vacationers with a free limited time offer of a RV park computer program guide with a directory of over 17,000 camping sites, including discounts at participating resorts.
Complainants allege that upon contacting the supposed directory members, they discovered the listed camping sites and resorts are not affiliated with the ‘Ultimate RV Travel Tool’ and no discounts are available. Additionally, consumers say they paid for the “free” offer and are unable to obtain a refund or take advantage of the advertised money back guarantee.
According to BBB’s research, Ultimate RV Camping claims locations in University Place, Buckley and Bonney Lake, Wash. and is operated by Craig Kirkland.
Tucson-based Internet Camping appears to be affiliated with Ultimate RV Camping and has accrued several unresolved complaints, resulting in an “F” rating from BBB serving Southern Arizona.

Fort Wainwright, Alaska, Mar. 8, – A new explosive ordnance disposal unit will stand up at Fort Wainwright, Wednesday, Mar. 10, in an activation ceremony.
The 65th Explosive Ordnance Disposal will be activated in a ceremony at Fort Wainwright’s Last Frontier Community Center Wednesday at 1 p.m.
The unit began forming on Jun. 2, 2009 when the first Soldiers were assigned to the unit. Ten months later the unit has gained more than 23 Soldiers and is expected to grow to more than 40.
The unit’s mission is to provide responsive explosive ordnance disposal and emergency response support; and to prepare to deploy in support of combatant commanders.

She throws jagged mountain ranges, frozen river, dense forest, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast at the mushers and their dog teams. Add to that temperatures far below zero, winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility, the hazards of overflow, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs and side hills, and you have the Iditarod. FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska – The annual Retiree Appreciation Day will be held at the Last Frontier Community Center Mar. 27. All military retirees and their families, regardless of branch of service, are invited to attend.
Visitors may update ID cards, renew post vehicle registrations and gather information from a number of post agencies at the Information Bazaar and Health Fair from 2 to 4 p.m. Agencies include AAFES, Commissary, Army Community Service, Army Career and Alumni Program, Airman and Family Readiness Center from Eielson Air Force Base and the Red Cross, among others.
Attendees at the Health Fair can get visual acuity screening; basic dental screening; immunization services and information on other medical programs.
Lunch for $4.25 starts at noon and opening remarks begin at 1 p.m. The guest speaker is Mike Plumer, veterans’ benefits advisor for the National Association for Uniformed Services.
A Stryker vehicle will be on display at the Last Frontier Community Center parking lot, and visitors can get a tour of the Battle Command Training Center from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. Retirees will also be offered a chance to bowl for $2 a game, with free shoes, or a package deal of three games, shoes and all-you-can-eat soup and salad for $15.

Matthew Joslin, 17, of Boy Scout Troop 56 will be honored at a special Eagle Scout Court of Honor. The ceremony wiil be held Saturday, March 13, at 4 p.m. at the Clearwater Baptist Church. In earning Scouting’s highest award, Matthew had to earn 21 merit badges, serve as a leader in his troop, and complete a major community service project.
Matthew’s service project took place at Rest Haven Cemetery. Leading his fellow Scouts, and other volunteers, he built a sheltered area complete with benches to be used by those grieving for their lost loved ones. In addition, the pavilion can be used to hold graveside services in inclement weather. The project took more than a year and a half to develop and carry through to completion.
Matthew has been a member of Troop 56, chartered to the First Baptist Church, for 6 years. He has served as patrol leader, senior patrol leader, historian, and chaplain’s aide.
Matthew is a junior and is homeschooled by his parents, Steve and Debbie Joslin. Matthew plans to study engineering after high school.

IRIDIUM Provides Satellite Voice and Data Communications for 2010 Iditarod Sled Dog Race
Global Satellite Company Teams with Service Partners to Provide Vital Safety Lifeline for Mushers, Dogs and Volunteers
Bethesda, Md. – March 4, 2010 – Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) is teaming with its service partners, Satcom Global (Americas) and IonEarth, to provide satellite voice and data services for the Iditarod® Sled Dog Race, which begins March 5 in Anchorage, Alaska.
IonEarth is equipping each of the participating sleds with a lightweight battery-powered GPS tracking device, which will transmit the sled’s location, speed, heading, altitude and air temperature every 15 minutes through the Iridium satellite network to provide a vital safety communications lifeline for the race’s mushers, dogs and volunteers. Race officials and fans can view the latest position and status of each competitor on a 3-D map on the Iditarod Website . This not only comes in handy for race monitoring, but also because it allows for a regular stream of data on the racers and sled dogs. The racers themselves will not be able to view the data from the trackers in the field, preserving the tradition of self-sufficiency and independence in competing against each other and fighting the elements.
Satcom Global (Americas) is deploying 55 Iridium satellite phones which will be used by race officials and volunteers during the race.
The Iditarod trail, which snakes across more than 1,000 miles through the Alaskan wilderness from Anchorage to Nome, covers some of the world’s harshest terrain. Most of the route – particularly through the center of Alaska – is not covered by terrestrial landlines, cellular networks or other satellite communication services.

The Iditarod Sled Dog Race billed as the “Last Great Race on Earth,” runs from Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea. Karate classes will be 6 times a month at the Delta Elementary School for $45.00.
We offer an adult class right after the youth.
The time is from 5:30 -6:30 for youth and from 6:45 to 7:45 for adults.
There will be a couple of gubernatorial candidates at the Delta Community Center from 5 to 7pm today, March 5. The District 12 Convention will start at 7 pm.
We will be electing district officers: Chairman, Vice Chair, Bonus Vote, and Secretary.
We will also be looking at the party rules and platform as well as electing delegates and alternates to attend the Republican State Convention April 15-17 in Juneau.
