Letter to the Editor

I am a local reader and enjoy your great newspaper. I am a parent of a diabetic child. I don’t want to take your time and explain how difficult and challenging this is. I have come accross a couple of articles that have been helpful and I know there are many parents in our community who could benefit from this information (specifically the information on medical ID for children). Could you make some of this information available in your papers?

Thanks for your time.
Ryan Wolfe

Sweet fashion treats for the diabetic Day-in, day-out challenges of managing diabetes are no laughing matter. But clever, upbeat and even silly ways of accepting the condition sure do ease the pressure to be good 24/7.

Chinook by George Hosier II – Clichés

This New Year, I resolved to use no more clichés. Since my writing is typically picture perfect, I was hard pressed to pinpoint any of my literary shortcomings off the top of my head. My policy has always been, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. However, after mulling it over, I put my finger on the fly in the ointment. At long last, it hit me like a ton of bricks: Every writer drops the ball now and then. The best laid plans of mice and men cannot guarantee that a hackneyed expression will not wreak havoc on an otherwise brilliant essay. Therefore, I am dead set on not using a single cliché in 2008. You can take that to the bank!

The truth be told, a cliché can really rain on a writer’s parade. Take the other day for instance. I had just finished shooting my manuscript off to the Editor of the Delta Wind via email, when my better half showed up as happy as a clam, intending to butter me up for some shopping money. She found me at my computer crying my eyes out.

To read the entire article we invite you to browse through our Chinook pages.

Looking for Photos for Norm Hilliker

Hello, I would like to put a notice out there:

I lost our first home to a fire when I moved to Delta January 1, 1981. One of the most devastating occurrences was losing photos.

So, if anyone has photos of Norm Hilliker that they’d like to give to Norm, please drop them off at the Delta Rural Fire Department and I will collect them to put in an album.

Thank you,
Ruby Hollembaek

Thank You – From Reuben and Rachel John

To the Incredible Community of Delta Junction and Fort Greely;

In June of 2007 our small family was gathered together to celebrate what is normally an exciting milestone in a pregnancy, the appointment for the first ultrasound of the soon to be “newest” member of our family. It was at this special time it became apparent that something was not right with our little one. A doctor informed us that our son had severe complications and a poor prognosis for his beginning. At first we were more than overwhelmed with the reports; we were devastated…Despite this news, we made the decision to go forward and treat my tummy as if our baby was completely fine. Nevertheless this news was also followed by many trips to Anchorage for special ultrasounds, and then a 4 month stay down south.

On October 29th 2007, Isaiah Peyton John was born. After major surgery, a long stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Providence Medical Center in Anchorage, and many times being given 1-2 hours to live—Isaiah came home. He became known as “the Miracle Baby” at Providence Hospital and to those who witnessed his miraculous recovery as well.

During this long and difficult ordeal, our families, our church, and the folks in Delta rallied to our side. We truly have no words to express our gratitude for the prayers and help we received—actually making it possible for our family to be together during one of the toughest of times without having to worry about our home, bills, or lack of prayers for our son=). Our family would like to thank all of you for this! There is not a way to name every person individually that made this possible; or even know fully how you helped us. But we would like to thank you—even if we can’t recognize your devotion by name in this letter. God Bless you all! There are a few special people we would like to especially thank however. These extraordinary people include Ruby Hollembaeck; Phebe Horschel; Lael Echo-Hawk; and Vanessa John for planning and hosting a chili feed/ benefit for us at the Delta Community Center. Roger Hoselton of Fort Greely, who wrote the music and lyrics to a song about our son called “The Little Engine Who Could”— who performed live at the auction with his band-thank you. We will cherish it always. Thank you to lifelong friends like Bethel, and for the special people who helped at the auction. Thank you to each of the families in Delta who lent a hand to us during our most difficult hour. Our family has been overwhelmed by the giving spirit of our longtime friends in Delta, and we are so grateful for all of you. Thank you to all the individuals, businesses, and corporations who blessed our family. We can only say we hope we can be there for others who might find themselves in similar situations. The generosity and prayers in this town is second to none. God Bless each and every one of you for the calls, prayers, cards, and help. We will never forget it.

In Loving Gratitude;
Reuben and Rachel John

Click on “Visit a Patient”; then enter “John” as the name and “john557” as the password. We would also like to thank each of you who wrote hundreds of letters of encouragement on this page during this time. They were often the lifeline we needed to get through each day. Thank you!
