Last Week's Mystery Photo Contest Results

Congratulations to Jeffrey Jones the winner of this weeks’ mystery photo. Jeffrey wins a gift certificate from Buffalo Center Drive In, compliments of John and Linda Sloan. Just as a reminder, I was talking with Cory Sloan last night, and she said they are closing on September 1, so make sure you redeem your gift certificates by the closing date.

The photo was taken at the old Texaco Gas Station, now known as Buffalo Service Center. The photo was indeed the Michelin Tire man on the sign. Some people called him the marshmallow man, and Jeffrey knew the location and who he was, and being 9 yrs old, he called him the toilet paper man this morning when I called him to get his address. We had 8 correct entries. As far as I know, 3 of the guesses this last week were submitted by children. Congratulations to all who have submitted correct guesses. Keep trying, we still have a few weeks left in this summer mystery photo contest.

Now, where have you seen this photo? Do you find yourself more aware of your surroundings when you are driving, wondering where the next mystery photo will pop up?

On Saturday, the Delta Packers got their second win in a row, beating the Fairbanks Bears 26-6 at Delta High School. The offensive success of the Packers is due to the great offensive line of BJ Merrymon, Heather Yearty, Randle Kimball, Richard Gardner, Kristoff Webb, and Matt Fellman, who held the Bears at bay for most of the game.
Caleb and Chance McLaren both had big games Saturday, as the brothers accounted for 3 of the 4 touchdowns scored. Caleb scored on a 35yd run and threw a 42yd TD pass to Chance. Chance also scored on a 1yd run as well. Duone Ellington scored the last touchdown on a quarterback keep, putting the game out of reach for the Bears.
The defense again had a stellar performance, shutting the Bears down in the first half and only allowing one big play the entire game, giving the Bears their only touchdown.
The next game for the Packers is August 18th, when they travel to Fairbanks to play the Saints. Game time is 4pm behind the Big Dipper Ice Arena, so if you are in Fairbanks stop by and support Packers Football!!

Court Challenge Clouds Proposed Borough Finances

A court challenge by two Delta area residents against a financial agreement between the City of Delta Junction and the operators of the Pogo mine could restrict income for the proposed borough the Fairbanks Daily News Miner reported today. The suit challenges the constitutionality existing payment in lieu of taxes (PILT) agreement, the paper reported:

Residents Margaret Mullins and Mike Murphy have challenged the deal as unconstitutional. Last month they unsuccessfully asked a state judge to halt the ongoing by-mail election occurring in Delta.

Despite the judge’s denial, however, Mullins and Murphy’s case remains open in Alaska Superior Court.

Murphy, a former Fairbanks North Star Borough engineer, has argued through his attorney in court documents that the deal between Delta Junction and the mine illegally surrenders a future borough assembly’s power to tax the mine. That, said Fairbanks attorney Charles Cole, weakens the six-year proposed budget submitted by borough organizers to the Alaska Local Boundary Commission.

The State of Alaska has pointed out that a similar PILT arrangement exists with the Northwest Arctic Borough, and that has not been challenged.

Public Funding of Campaigns Initiative Proceeds to Signature Phase

Press Release from the Lt. Governor’s Office

August 9, 2007, Anchorage, Alaska – Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell certified an initiative related to public funding of campaigns, allowing the initiative sponsors to proceed with gathering signatures required to place the measure on the ballot. The lieutenant governor certified that the initiative, known as 07CASE, and application, were in proper form.

This initiative was the sponsors’ second attempt at certification. An earlier initiative, known as 07COGA, was denied certification because it failed to pass the legal test requiring initiatives to contain only one subject. The initiative sponsors made revisions and filed this second initiative, known as 07CASE.

Lieutenant Governor Parnell’s decision to certify the second initiative (07CASE) as to form was supported by a number of Department of Law legal opinions. The Department of Law’s opinion dated August 8, 2007, concluded that the bill and application are in the proper form, and that the application complies with the constitutional and statutory provisions governing the use of the initiative.

Petition booklets will be prepared for the prime sponsors of the initiative by the Alaska Division of Elections. The sponsors will need to collect at least 23,831 valid signatures from qualified voters in 30 election districts in order for the proposed bill to be placed on a ballot.

In the third quater the Packers struck first on a 3yd run by Caleb McLaren, which was set up by a 15yd interception by Josh Goodart. The extra point gave the Packers a 7-0 lead. Logging and Milling Wrap up Their Roller Coaster Season

The Logging and Milling softball team wrapped up their roller coaster season last Monday night, losing yet again to Cummings Sawmill 29-17.
It was an enjoyable game with both teams swinging the bats well, played on a perfect Alaska evening.

Joe Casey slammed a hard base hit to left field in the game, ending a personal slump and driving in a couple of runs. The key hit also yielded a large chocolate-vanilla twist for Joe from the Buffalo Drive-In.

“Joe has worked really hard on his hitting all year,” said pitcher, Tommy Geyer. “It’s good to see him hitting good. Joe has a lot of potential and a lot of heart. I believe he’ll be a top notch outfielder next year.”

The loggers certainly had their struggles this year, winning only four games and losing fifteen. “We knew it would be a tough season for us,” said Tommy. “But when things didn’t go well, we didn’t turn on each other or point the finger. We just tried to encourage one another and stay together as a team whether we won or lost.”

Softball is over now (except for a possible game with Whitestone) and the fellows are ready to go do some hunting. But we wanted to thank a few key people who organized things this year. Special thanks to Hanni Marchuch, Richard Lester, Mike Kingston, Joe Jenkins, Dan Beck (umpire), Morley, and other unsung heroes.

Also we would like to thank the Lord for the good times, the freedom that we enjoy, the good weather, and for keeping us all safe on the fields.

Until next year,
The Logging & Milling Team

PS Remember the Logger’s team motto: “It’s better to be lucky than good”

–Tommy Geyer

Husband Loses Baby Toggenburg Goats

On August 8th, at around 8:pm.,my husband Jay, lost my goats. The act was very innocent on his part. He only had these two sweet little things for just seven days. He started to talk to them and they gave him lots of attention. So he felt pity for the small animals and let them off their leads.

On Monday during the windy and rainy strom he left them to make himself a cup of pine tea. While he did this he occasionally checked on the goats from the window.
After a few minutes or more, he realized that he could no longer see the baby goats. So he went looking for the goats. After many hours of searching in the rain, he came home wet and cold with no goats.

If you see two toggenbury goats about the age of six months old please give me a call. My number is 347-1317. I am thinking about a very big dog house to put my husband in for being so neglectful.

If any of you can help me it would be greatly apprciated. The area that the goats were lost is around nine mile Nistler Road. Thanks for you help.

If I find them I might let Jay out of the dog house.Again thank you so much for reading my story and maybe you will see them in your travels.

City Council to Repeal No Hunting Ordinance, Firearms Discharge Ordinance Off the Table

An ordinance prohibiting big game hunting in the city limits of Delta Junction is scheduled for repeal at this afternoon’s city council meeting, according to the pre-published council agenda. The council does not now intend to introduce that ordinance this afternoon, said City Clerk Pat White, wanting instead to hear more public discussion on the issue. White said that citizens interested in this issue are invited to address the council this afternoon. One person is already scheduled to speak.

Bison Industry Wraps Up Week-Long International Gathering

All states were represented, 2 from Delta Jct, Alaska….Randy Mayo from Stevens Village Bison Farm and Ruby Hollembaek from the Alaska Interior Game Ranch, Inc. There were several countries too and also Ted Turner & former Rep. Tom Daschle.

Black Hills Gathering Celebrates Heritage, Maps Future

The largest U.S. gathering of buffalo producers and supporters in more than a decade wrapped up over the weekend, as the nearly 600 attendees headed home from the International Bison Conference in South Dakota’s Black Hills.

For more than a week, participants from the United States, Canada and seven other countries explored the marketing and production issues important to sustaining the growth of the burgeoning bison industry. According to one industry leader, this third-ever international gathering of the international bison industry comes at a key time for producers and consumers alike.

“In the past few years, bison has gained in popularity as people are discovering that they can have the best of good health and great taste,” said Dave Carter, executive director of the United State’s National Bison Association. “The activities at the International Bison Conference helped producers and marketers focus on the important steps necessary to continuing our growth as a natural, high-quality part of the food marketplace.”

Sessions conducted during the weeklong conference highlighted both the heritage and the future of the bison industry.

Four chefs addressing the conference demonstrated the versatility of bison meat as they prepared dishes ranging from short ribs to tenderloin. Dr. Kevin Weiland, founder of the Dakota Diet, discussed the role that naturally-raised bison can play in contributing to personal health and weight maintenance. And, Erika Lesser of Slow Food USA announced during her speech at the conference that bison have officially been boarded onto the Slow Food “Ark of Taste,” a metaphorical vessel designed to promote sustainable and heritage foods.

Allen Savory of Holistic Management International reviewed how replicating the natural foraging habits of bison can serve as a valuable element in rangeland management, and internationally renowned animal handling expert Dr. Temple Grandin of Colorado State University presented information on low-stress management of buffalo.

Terry Kremeniuk, executive director of the Canadian Bison Association, said, “The North American Bison Industry recognizes that our customers not only want high quality products, but expect that we will raise our herds with respect toward the animals and the environment in which they live. The International Bison Conference provided valuable lessons for all of us as we move forward in the marketplace.”

The formal conference activities kicked off at Mount Rushmore on Tuesday, July 24 with keynote presentations by entrepreneur Ted Turner and former U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle. Daschle praised the role of private ranchers in restoring bison to the North American ecosystem.

“A century ago, there were fewer than 1,000 bison left alive. But across North America, buffalo are back; half a million strong,” Daschle said.

Turner, who owns the world’s largest bison herd, noted that the industry has suffered its share of challenges over the past two decades. He added that he established his chain of Ted’s Montana Grill restaurants in large part to provide a stronger marketing outlet for bison.

Following his speech to the conference, Turner was inducted into the National Buffalo Hall of Fame.

Chinook by George M Hosier II – Fun

I had one of those Déjà vu moments the other day. Did you ever smell an odor or hear a sound that triggered long-forgotten memories? Maybe it was the unique olfactory cocktail of musty mattress ticking, fresh log sealer and wet sneakers that took you back to your summer youth camp days. Perhaps the sound of a revving Harley, a guttural laugh, creaking leather and the “snick” of a switchblade spring reminded you of the time you wore a Kawasaki shirt to a H.O.G rally. For me it was a petulant voice that I overheard in a local business, “So, what is there to do around here for fun?”

Instantly it seemed that I was back in Moose Hole Lodge tending the cash register as a pimply-faced adolescent. Back then, the concept of human beings not being able to figure out how to occupy their very own time was incomprehensible. The first time a traveler asked me the question, I was so nonplussed that I found myself struck mute on the spot. It was as if someone had asked me, “So, why do you wear your ears on the side of your head?”

Chinook by George M Hosier II – Trouble Bruin

Is anybody else as thrilled and excited as I am about the rash of recent grizzly sightings in the Tanana Loop area? I love to view wildlife. I find it particularly exhilarating when I am able to have a close-up encounter with one of our woodland friends. There’s nothing like the adrenaline rush of having a squirrel take a scrap of bread from your hand, having a chickadee perch on your finger, having a butterfly land on your nose or being close enough to a grizzly to smell it’s rustic breath and count the darling little scraps of rotten meat jammed between its incisors.

The most frustrating thing about these recent sightings is the fact that although neighbors all around me have seen at least two different bears within a 50 foot to 5 mile radius of my property, for some reason I haven’t been fortunate enough to personally experience their noble presence. Ironically, they will go to visit some grouchy guy who empties a shotgun worth of buckshot into them for merely attempting to sample his dog on the front porch. They will drop in on a coworker in the middle of the night who has a paranoid husband that fires Roman candles at them. They will join a neighbor kid on an ATV ride, jog along like a devoted dog, and reach out to give him an affectionate slap, but will they come and see me? So far, not a chance! I have even taken to going out to my field and pinching my goats from time to time to make them squall in hopes that one of the grizzlies will perk up and amble over to investigate. Fat chance.

School news moved to its own separate section

Today we have created a “blog” named Delta/Greely School News to carry school information. The headlines from this blog will appear on the home page of the Delta News Web. There was enough material that our editor, Pam Dunklebarger, felt that it needed its own separate section this year. Already we have quite a bit of material in the new section.

One of the most useful aspects of the blog system is that it allows multiple authors. This really is a new paradigm: it is no longer necessary to funnel all articles through a single editor. Anyone with access to the Delta/Greely School News blog can add content and edit it later. We invite school officials to obtain access credentials — it only takes an email to Dunklebarger — and post information useful to parents and students.

We will, of course, continue to post school news and other material like the monthly menu emailed to us.

We hope you find it useful, and as always, we are interested in your comments on how to make this all more useful.

Undiagnosed Vision Problems Severely Affect Students' Ability to Learn

Submitted by: Alaska Optometric Association (907) 770-3777 or (877)693-2562 akoa@alaska.com

Anchorage, AK—Millions of children will start school this year with a vision problem that may inhibit their ability to learn and ultimately affect the rest of their lives. As parents send their children back to school, one of the most important things they can do to help ensure their child’s ability to learn is to take them for an eye exam. The Alaska Optometric Association (AKOA) recommends comprehensive eye exams especially for children entering preschool and kindergarten.

Proper vision detection and correction in young children may affect much more than their ability to see clearly. Without a comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist, many children have vision problems that can go undiagnosed, and may even be misdiagnosed as a learning disorder.

“An early comprehensive eye exam evaluates a child’s vision, eye teaming skills and tracking skills as well as eye health. It’s a good way to avoid problems down the road,” said Dr. Rob Fleckenstein, Eagle River Vision Clinic.

Children entering preschool or kindergarten benefit the most from comprehensive eye exams though they rarely receive them early enough. Currently, only 14 percent of children under age six have received a comprehensive eye exam, according to the U.S. Center for Health Statistics. Vision impairments in children of this age can be detected through an eye exam and are typically easy to correct immediately afterwards.

An eye exam will help correct common vision problems, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness as well as more serious conditions such as amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye. Amblyopia affects about 5 percent of children nationwide. The condition is completely treatable and preventable if detected within the first few years of life. The lack of early eye care has allowed amblyopia to escape detection, and it remains the leading cause of blindness in Americans under 40.

“Children may not recognize that they have a vision problem,” said Dr. Fleckenstein, “particularly children who are too young to know the alphabet or even to speak. However, there are proven methods for full eye exams on young children that can be done efficiently and effectively.” The back-to-school season is an ideal time for parents to take their child to an eye doctor for a comprehensive exam, particularly since much of what children learn is obtained through the eyes.
