The City of Delta Junction Landfill will be closed on Saturday, March 17, so that we may attend the memorial service for city employee, Dave Boadwine.

The Landfill will resume normal operating hours on Tuesday, March 20 at 11 AM.

FAIRBANKS – The Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival proudly presents the 2007 Poster Signing 11 am – 5 pm both Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18, at the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts, Civic Center Exhibit Hall, located at Pioneer Park off Airport Way.

This year’s featured artist is Cheryl Berrong, a local artist from Fairbanks. The watercolor painting, entitled “June’s Sunflowers” features a colorful array of wild sunflowers. Although she has been painting for many years, this is Cheryl’s first published painting.

Born in Ft. Yukon and raised in mining camps in the 40-mile district, Chicken and Tok, Cheryl is a lifelong Alaskan. She began drawing and painting as a child and with the guidance and encouragement of her mother, also an artist, she explored various mediums. Cheryl is a multi-media artist, but works primarily in watercolor. Her florals and landscapes express light and color. Her passion is to share the joy and adventure of her surroundings and creativity through her art. Cheryl lives 20 miles north of Fairbanks at Cleary Summit with her partner, Mike Goulding, two black cats, and several raucous ravens.

All posters sold at the Art Expo will be signed by the artist. Posters are $10 each. Also hot off the press, the 2007 Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival Catalog will be available this weekend. When Opera Fairbanks began planning its upcoming concert, organizers contacted Fairbanks artist Barbara Tudor to discuss creating a couple of backdrops, one for each section of the program. “I’d been to a few opera concerts where the music was stunning, but the programs (performed before simple white or black backdrops) were visually lacking. We wanted something more for our first production” said Opera Fairbanks President Cassandra Tilly.

Barbara Tudor further developed this idea by creating a series of backdrops that express the music in visual form. The artist researched the operas, and over the course of several weeks, the idea turned into reality.

“A Touch of Opera” incorporates nine (9) original artworks, 7 ft wide by 14 ft high, that showcase Tudor’s interpretation of the music as visual art. The artist’s program notes help connect the art to the music (excerpted):

A strong narrative thread weaves operatic music and lyrics together into a distinctive tapestry. Whether comedy or tragedy, the story provides the context for the music. With this in mind, narrative was the inspiration for the artwork accompanying A Touch of Opera.

In opera, romantic love more often leads to tragedy. Our musical selections from Tosca and The Masked Ball express the lament of heartbroken souls whose worlds have fallen apart. In the artwork, as the stained glass design gradually loses cohesion, it suggests the collapse of structure or belief systems.

The inescapable trajectory of fate, events set in motion that determine one’s destiny, is a theme expressed by Don Carlo and Don Giovanni. In Don Carlo, King Philip cannot change the fact that his wife has never loved him and is unfaithful, nor in Don Giovanni can Giovanni overcome his villainous womanizing. Both must suffer the consequences. In the artwork, this theme is represented as pathways, trajectories for energy particles preordained to attract or repel.

In Samson and Delilah, seduction underscores the conflict of good versus evil. Delilah seduces Samson with her song, “My heart opens to the Sound of Your Voice.” The artwork symbolizes her heart as the entrance of a monumental temple. This temple opens to receive the silver notes of Samson’s voice, which descend into the void, sealing his fate.

“A Touch of Opera” runs on Friday, March 16 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 18 at 3 p.m. in Fairbanks’ Pioneer Park Centennial Theatre, featuring special guest Michael Douglas Jones, Bass, as well as Anchorage vocalists Anastasia Jamieson and Marlene Bateman, and Fairbanks singers Morgan Reed, Brandon Michael, and Cassandra Tilly.

Michael Douglas Jones, bass, leads the cast of Opera Fairbanks’ inaugural production, “A Touch of Opera.” Highly regarded for his appearances in works of the 20th and 21st centuries, Michael starred in the 2005 premiere of The Love of A Chair (John Metcalf/Tremblay) in Montreal with performances continuing in Wales and England. Michael developed his leading role over 3 years period, collaborating with the composer, librettist and stage director through improvisations in creativeworkshops. He made his international debut in Sweden in the lead role of Director in Kafka’s Chimp (Metcalf), (in Swedish), preceded by its world premiere at Banff Music Centre for the Arts (in English). Michael won the prestigious Jessies Award for “outstanding performance by an actor in a leading role” for his creation of the Marquis in 120 Songs for Marquis de Sade (Hannan) in the world premiere co-production of Modern Baroque Opera and Vancouver New Music.

Michael maintains a very active performing career as well as a teaching career. He runs a private voice studio on Long Island and in Manhattan, where he also served on the voice faculty of New York University. He was Music Director and Vocal Coach at NYU for an innovative new “rap” opera, Odin, and praised by the New York Times as “an amazing example of, what is possible in the world of new opera.” In 2005, Michael became Executive/Artistic Director to his newly formed non-profit, Companion Star, which will produce new music-theater works for the stage based on the idea of collaboration between artists and composers to create original works that challenge the boundaries of traditional opera and music-theater.

Michael made his New York City Opera debut in Madama Butterfly and has sung leading bass roles in Victoria, BC; Sarasota, El Paso, Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne in Montreal, Florida Philharmonic, San Antonio Symphony, Florentine Opera, and Memphis Opera. Concert appearances have included Stravinsky’s L’histoire du Soldat, Kagel’s Fürst Igor, Stravinsky and Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon. Michael has recorded operas in progress for Atlantic Records and new works of composers on the BMI label.

Dr. Jones will appear with Anchorage artists Anastasia Jamieson and Marlene Bateman, as well as Fairbanks vocalists Morgan Reed, Brandon Michael, and Cassandra Tilly. Performances are at 8 pm Friday March 16 and 3 pm Sunday March 18. David Allen Boadwine passed away unexpectedly on Sunday March 11 at his home with his family at his side.Dave was born October 7, 1959 in Vancouver, Washington to Larry and Ethel Boadwine. He was later blessed with a sister, Renee, whom he loved dearly. He lived in Washington until he joined the Army at 17 and was stationed at Gerstle River, Alaska. David quickly fell in love with both Alaska and Barbara, his wife of 26 years. They were married when Dave was 20 and Barb 16.

In 1981 Dave found his greatest passion and with his wife at his side began building their log home where they would later bring their son Gregory Allen Boadwine and daughter Danielle Nicole Boadwine home to grow up.Dave truly loved everything Alaskan freedom had to offer. He was a avid boater, hunter, and snow machine enthusiast. In true Alaskan style his log home is “still in the works”. He always said his best memory was giving his little girl away in marriage and being her “gentlemen of honor” in his front yard.

Dave was a master of so many skills and had been a mechanic, heavy equipment operator, log home “builder”, even breaker of wild horses. He could fix anything he set his hands on or his mind to. He was employed with the City of Delta Junction as Public Works Director.

David was proceeded in death by his father Larry Boadwine. He is survived by his wife Barbara Boadwine, son Greg Boadwine, daughter and son in law Danielle and Dave McCombs all of Delta Junction and grandson Trevor Boadwine of Washington. Also his beloved mother Ethel Johnson, sister and brother in law Renee and Bob Brusseau and niece Kelsey Brusseau of Washington. Mother and father in law Chuck and Sallie Vaughn, sisters and brothers in law Sharon and Gary Lewis, John and Heidi Vaughn and nephews Jonathan Larrabee and Chet Vaughn all of California.

Services will be held at the Delta Community Center Saturday, March 17 at 1 pm. He did always love St. Patrick’s Day.

A celebration of life will be held at the Moose Lodge following the services. The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support.

A memorial account has been set up at the local Wells Fargo branch to help with funeral expenses.

Carefree 101 Cooking Terms… Welcome to 2007! It’s time for resolutions and I’m ashamed to admit I’ve already broken one of my top four promises to myself. (Someday, in a far off land where time is on my side, I really will get the CG to the editor early.) The other three resolutions are the same as they’ve always been: Be slow to judge, be quick to forgive, and practice, practice, practice being patient. Dang, that last one is always SUCH a pain!

There’s been a lot of eating and cooking and kitchen activity in the past couple of weeks, so I thought you might be a bit tired thinking about what to make and eat and then clean up after yet again. So instead of recipes, let’s look at some cooking basics, and give the leftovers a chance to clear out of the fridge for a couple weeks. To read the rest of this column click here

Homestead Hearth.. How does a dream begin? According to local baker Rebekah Holbrook, it all started at the breakfast table on April 14, 1995. “I remember it perfectly,” she said. “My dad said, “I’ve been thinking….” and the dream of having a brick oven bakery business was born.

The dad in question, Joel Holbrook, remembers it this way. His own father was visiting from Michigan and told the Alaska branch of his family stories of a wood fired brick oven that produced wonderful sourdough bread. “That seemed like a good idea to me” says Joel, and he started researching ovens, bread and all the details that go along with starting a home based business. Carefree Wacky Ingredients…Welcome to the wacky ingredient file – also known as “Cool Stuff I Stole from Other People.” It’s a sad fact that sooner or later, I will pester you for a recipe, no matter who you are or how we met. Are you changing a tire at twenty below? Let’s talk soup! Chasing your overtired kids around the store at 5:30 on a Saturday? Tell me your favorite cake recipe right now! Once, after tasting a potato dish that was so good it knocked me sideways, I hauled out a pen and notebook then and there to scribble down the recipe.

Did I mention this was during a formal wedding reception, complete with tiny baby orchids, tuxes and a full orchestra? Clearly, I have recipe issues and the only way to deal with it is to of course, find even more to share with you. We would like to let all of our dear friends of Delta to know that Little David was born healthy and happy on March 7th at 5:25 pm. Mom and baby are doing great and are at home resting.

(Anchorage) – Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell is pleased to announce that the Faith-Based & Community Initiatives’ Stars of Gold awards ceremony will be held on April 23, 2007, in cooperation with the Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Awards.

The Stars of Gold award program honors those who give freely of their hearts and lives to communities within Alaska. The goal of the award program is to encourage volunteerism statewide, thereby empowering community members to get involved and address social issues, to invest in their neighbors and assist in developing healthy families, and to lay a foundation for a stronger community.

If you know an adult or teen that has benefited their community through compassion, kindness, and volunteerism, please click here and fill out a nomination packet. All nomination forms must be received by March 30, 2007 at 5 pm in order to be considered. The LBC will meet in Delta Junction to convene a public hearing under 3 AAC 110.560 regarding the proposal to incorporate the Deltana borough on:

Friday, March 16, 2007 – 5:30 p.m.
Delta Junction High School – Large Gym

Following the public hearing, the LBC may convene a decisional meeting under 3 AAC 110.570, to act on the proposal. If the meeting does not conclude by 10 p.m., the meeting will recess and reconvene at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, at the same location.

Circumstances permitting, the LBC will tour portions of the proposed borough before the hearing or decisional meeting.

Delta Christian Drama Association will be presenting their third annual spring production the weekend after Easter. The original stage play, Showdown at Paradise Gulch will be performed at Delta Junction Assembly of God Church, 7:00pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 13-15, 2007.

Admission is free.

This year’s show will be set in the American West, and will be full of humor, adventure, and suspense.

The proposed North Pole to Delta Railroad project is being scrutinized in the Citizens Against Government Waste “Pig Book” which describes federally funded pork barrel projects. The rail service would support industry and military installations around Fairbanks, the national missile defense system at Fort Greely and infrastructure for a natural gas pipeline. I peered dubiously into the depths of the Styrofoam cup clenched in my 14-year-old hand. Experimentally I dabbed at the contents with my flimsy plastic spoon. I could identify a thin broth with globules of grease skating on the surface, a few grains of white rice, and some shreds of meat. But what was this other stuff? Some of it looked like wide, small diameter rubber bands. There was also a quantity of an amorphous, porous gel-like substance. At my elbow somebody was talking. Nearly hypnotized with morbid fascination as I was, it was difficult to tear my gaze away from the Styrofoam cup, but when I managed to do so, I beheld Moose Hole elder, Jacob Thaddeus grinning at me. The beating of drums and Athabascan singing that accompanied the current dance made it difficult to hear what he was saying. I leaned closer.

“Moose nose stew.” He jabbed a finger at my Styrofoam cup. “Eeee, so good! My daughter, he cook for potlatch. Make you strong!”

He was right. It did make me strong. Just hearing the stuff identified was already having that effect on me. I felt my abdomen muscles tighten. I found myself clenching my teeth together with a strength I did not know I possessed, as I held back an undeniably strong impulse to gag.

(Anchorage) – Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell announced today that he denied certification to an application for an initiative entitled, “An Act requiring the State of Alaska to vote on seeking changes to existing law and constitutional provisions to authorize Alaskan independence,” designated 07AKIN by the Division of Elections.

The Lieutenant Governor made the decision to deny certification based on a recommendation by the Department of Law, which determined that the application does not comply with the constitutional and statutory provisions governing use of the initiative.

The Lieutenant Governor agreed with the Department of Law’s recommendation which stated, “The bill proposed by the initiative application calls for Alaska to seek changes in ‘existing law and Constitutional provisions’ to allow it to secede from the United States. The Court in Kolhaas held that ‘[w]hen the forty-nine-star flag was first raised at Juneau, we Alaskans committed ourselves to that indestructible Union, for good or ill, in perpetuity. To suggest otherwise would disparage the republican character of the National Government.’ Id. at 720. Secession is clearly unconstitutional and to seek changes in the law to allow a state to secede from the indestructible Union is also unconstitutional.”

Initiative applications are not “approved” or “disapproved” by the Lieutenant Governor, rather they are “certified” or “denied.” State law specifies criteria that must be met for an initiative application to be certified.

For your own safety, please sit down before you read any further. I am about to break the story of the century! I look forward to humbly accepting the Pulitzer Prize, for uncovering a tale of tyranny and bureaucratic corruption that will make your blood run cold. Are you ready? Here it is: wood stoves in the Fairbanks North Star Borough are about to be outlawed! That’s right. I was first tipped off to this situation by my neighbor’s best friend’s uncle’s cousin’s girlfriend’s ex-aerobics instructor who overheard a sinister conversation as he was regaining consciousness after passing out drunk under a table in a Fairbanks bar.

As the alcohol oozed slowly from his brain, he became aware of the fact that he was staring at two pairs of polished wingtip shoes. That immediately struck him as suspicious, because anybody who wears wingtips in Fairbanks in December is a salesman, a preacher or a Fed. He kept quiet and strained to listen. Sure enough, he could make out the words that the owners of the wingtips murmured over a couple of fuzzy navels, unaware of my source lying in a pool of vomit at their feet. Gradually, my source was able to piece together the sordid facts that some outfit called the In-vitro Mental Perdition Agency is accusing Fairbanks of having an air pollution problem.

I have lived in places where shopping is nearly an afterthought. In these maelstroms of population, the acquisition of food has been simplified to a reflex action performed on an impulse basis. No planning is required, because, if you forget something at the store, you can just throw on a pair of shoes, duck around the corner and buy it, whenever the need comes to mind. If they happen to be sold out of the particular item in question, you can select an identical one from any one of a dozen retailers within spitting distance of your living room sofa. A shopping trip is a 10-minute blip of time that barely registers on the radar of your schedule of daily activities. It’s a nightmare!

Not so, here in the Last Frontier! Granted, Delta Junction is cultivating a growing variety of businesses that supply merchandise, but even so, the inventory and prices cannot compete with the mega chain retailers that sprawl across Fairbanks and Anchorage. However, for the bush residents and small villages, the options are very slim indeed. I know what I’m talking about. When I lived in Moose Hole, my parents owned the only business in town—Moose Hole Lodge.

Another special event of the evening will be the debut of a photographic wall mural designed by Cindy Lou Aillaud with special help from BJ Bond and Fronty Parker. This wall mural depicts children during Recess at 20 Below. Photographs and labor were a donation to the school. This will be displayed in the front entry of Delta Elementary School.

Lead character Brent Spangler is a respected deputy sheriff in the sleepy little town of Paradise Gulch, Montana. His wife, Katie helps him run a mustang rescue ranch. With their teenage children, Garth and Gail, the Spangler family leads a comfortable and unremarkable life.

However, all that changes when Brent’s estranged sister, Karla, is killed in a New Jersey crime spree. When Karla’s children, Spike and Marina come to live with the Spangler family, it is evident that not only must Brent and Katie help their niece and nephew work through their grief and trauma, but that the task is complicated by significant cultural, emotional and philosophical barriers.

Add to the plot a vengeful ex-con who is determined to kill Deputy Spangler, and the audience is guaranteed plenty of action and suspense. Whether you are looking for gunplay or romance, faith or comedy, action or psychological suspense, this show is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser.
