Fairbanks Performer Comes to Delta

The house was packed for the house concert, featuring Michael Stackhouse, on Saturday evening following Thanksgiving.

30 or so appreciative folks listened and watched in the Senior Lounge as Mike played guitar and harmonica (simultaneously) and sang 2 hours worth of material drawn largely from his CD Comin Home, which may be procured from CD Baby on the web.

Michael is a charming and animated performer, and when he smiles, his entire face—no, wait,—the entire room lights up!

Michael is a regular performer in Fairbanks at the Tanana Valley Fair each year, the Folk Festival, and other venues around town. No cheechako, he has been an Alaskan for many years, and has a homestead 10 miles south of the Arctic Circle on Red Mountain Creek. Retired from State service, he is now delighted to be able to spend more time developing his performance skills, and preparing to record another CD.

Enthusiasts were fortunate to be able to book Michael for this personal concert and the delectable snacks brought to Delta courtesy Alpha Omega Life Care, Inc. and the Polar Pickers.

Remembering Pearl Harbor

The Attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise aerial attack largely on Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii, and the USA launched by the 1st Air Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy of the task force Carrier Striking Task Force on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941 (Hawaii time). It was aimed at the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy and its defending Army Air Corps and Marine defensive squadrons as preemptive war intended to neutralize the American forces in the Pacific in an impending World War II. Pearl Harbor, was actually only one of a number of military and naval installations which were attacked, including those on the other side of island.

Of 8 American battleships in the harbor, the attack resulted in 1 destroyed, 2 sunk at their moorings, 1 capsized, 1 beached and 3 damaged but afloat. With the exception of the Arizona (destroyed), all the others were refloated or righted and 6 (Nevada, West Virginia, Tennessee, Maryland, California and Pennsylvania) were repaired and returned to service. While the Oklahoma, which had capsized, was righted, she was never repaired. Additionally, the attack severely damaged 9 other warships, destroyed 188 aircraft, killed 2,403 American servicemen, and 68 civilians. However, the Pacific Fleet’s three aircraft carriers were not in port and were left undamaged, as were the base’s vital oil tank farms, Navy Yard and machine shops, submarine base, and power station, as well as the Headquarters Building (home to the intelligence unit HYPO). These provided the basis for the Pacific Fleet’s campaign during the rest of the war.

Alaskans shopping from home for Alaskan Holiday Gifts

The Internet is often considered the enemy of local businesses, particularly small businesses. Alaskans now are able to search the Internet for Alaskan holiday gifts exclusively from fellow Alaskans. AlaskaGoogle.com is a custom search engine created with Google Co-Op. The service is in it’s beta release from the search giant Google.com

AlaskaGoogle.com developer Robert Cortez says about the project, “I personally preview every site included in AlaskaGoogle.com which currently searches 2,740 quality Alaskan websites”. One of the requirements for inclusion, as published on the website, is that all businesses or organizations must have an Alaskan address to be included. AlaskaGoogle.com works on the same principles as Google.com. There are no fees for sites to submit, to be included, or for better placement in the search results. Search returns are based on the relevancy of the website to the search terms input by the site user. The search results can be further refined by selecting from sixteen different labels including “Business/Industry” or “Made In Alaska” AlaskaGoogle.com is supported by advertising, primarily from Google’s Adwords program which delivers relevant text ads based on the search terms. No annoying flashing banners or popups. Using the same simple successful model as Google.com, AlaskaGoogle.com is light on graphics to provide fast results even on the slowest connections. In addition to the personal screening of sites, search results and advertising are further screened for objectionable material by Google’s “Safe Search” technology.

Cortez says about AlaskaGoogle.com, “The focus of this project has been to provide Alaskans with a tool to find Alaskan information, products and services from quality Alaskan sources. It’s still very much a work in progress. I’m adding and refining the site everyday with unique quality Alaskan websites.”

Robert Cortez is a 30 year Alaskan resident. He has been a businessman and entrepreneur working as an independent Internet consultant and project manager since 1998.

Military exercise to test Fort Greely's security measures starts Dec. 4

A military exercise called Vigilant Shield will take place on Fort Greely December 4-14. The exercise will allow Fort Greely to test its security measures.

About 120 soldiers from Fort Richardson will participate in the exercise and will be housed in the Fort Greely physical fitness center (gym) Dec. 5-8. The gym will be closed to the public those four days.

At various times, delays may occur at the front gate, and additional traffic can be expected. Drivers should ensure they have valid vehicle documents at all times, and all those entering the installation should be prepared to present entry documents.

Students, parents, and visitors should use extra care when walking and driving at this time. Traffic conditions may suddenly change due to the movement of military, emergency and fire vehicles. Greely School should not be otherwise affected by this exercise.

For more information, contact the Fort Greely public affairs officer, Mr. Leslie Ozawa, at 873-4604, or email.
